Default Wheel Air Holes

How many and what size air holes are you drilling in your wheels? I have 4 Vanquish SLW3 1" wheels that need breathing holes and can't decide if they should breath slowly or rapidly. I will be using Vanquish 5120 foams with the triangles removed. The crawler is a Beetlejuice V1 Berg.

search "breather" in this forum and you get more than one page of results. The general consensus is 1/8" hole...still up in the air is how many - ranges from 1 to 4 or more.

I had trouble making myself drill holes in my expensive VP wheels so I cut small holes, 2 about 1/16" dia. with my wire cutters, in the tires instead and it was a very nice option. Works really well, you can't even notice them unless you look for them and tires are a perishable item, my wheels are not. Just my $.02.

I have always contemplated holes, but can never bring myself to do it. The sound of getting sand, dirt, water inside and tearing up the foams I don't like I guess

I've taken my tires off many times and have never found anything inside my tire. Hard to imagine anything getting in there with the foams pressed hard against the tire. But I understand it's possible, I guess.

That does make sense

Can you get a pic of your wire cutter hole, or is it actually just a slice than a hole? I would actually try that option on my rig

If you dont have big enough holes or not enough holes ,
you will get some bounce.......

if you squeeze your tire on only one side as hard an as fast as you can
while watching the other side, and if you see the other side get bigger then you dont have enough holes.... (or not big enough)

if the air cant escape fast, you will get bounce..........
hope that makes sence..........

well at least, this works for me............

I never have any luck searching on any forum but I did this time! I'd have used every other word but "breather". I'm a dumbass so thanks for the search word suggestion...seriously!

I agree with Strato54, cut your holes in your tires NOT your wheels. Just my opinion. I have tried both, but like the tire holes better than wheel holes.

Good luck.

Well you can use a leather punch for making holes in tires and if you are good than you could drill a hole in the rim to intersect a beadlock ring screw so that you can plug it if you want

I use a soldering iron and put two holes in each tire (180 degrees apart). The soldering iron seals the hole and seems to stop it from ripping further.

For the same reason, I can't bring myself to drill into my expensive VP wheels.

I drilled some small breathers 180 from each other, but far out enough on the wheel so I can plug them with a cap head screw so the foams don't soak/degrade if I come across some water, or when its time for a good scrubbing.

I usually drill and tap two 3mm holes.
Need less; put in a grub screw.
Need more; drill 2 more.
