I run the same Smith as JRH. I use Oxy Mapp since it burns cleaner and I use mine indoors.

i run the bernzomatic 2 tank setup with hose like the OP does... i love it.. i've even used it for other projects besides rc like i had a lawnmower hub that i needed to get off of a 3/4" solid shaft and the propane torch wouldnt get it hot enough so i used the bernzo and it worked awesome... i dont use it that much so its pretty cheap for me, i've had it just over a year and gone through like 2 oxygen tanks.

I run this setup my pops bought me.... My dads welding distributor said to not spend the money on the smith torch as you pay more simply for the name... He recommended the Gentec setup as its of the same quality. I have personally not used the smith torch so I cannot confirm for sure but I will say I love my Gentec torch. This is the oxy/acty setup but you can buy the oxy/prop setup also. This is the cheaper alternative to the smith mini torch. SOL-226.00 - Gentec Small Torch Kits with Regulators, Oxy/Acetylene |

Torch and tank r a great starter setup... Pretty much what I started with... As for silver solder your best bet would be a welding or plumbing supply place... Make sure u get a good flux as well. I'd recommend Safety silv by Harris

Would it be really hard to build a tube cage with a wire welder?

As for the solders I'm not sure... I went straight for the silver solder 45 and safety silv flux and that's pretty much all I've used. As for the mig welder, I do have one of those too but prefer the silver solder.... I find there is too much clean-up of the joint with the mig. That being said there are guys that mig and guys that Tig as well. I would think if your gonna weld, Tig would be the way to go... No clean up of the joint after.

It should be more than enough.. The more complicated/ joints the chassis has the more you will use. A southern buggy is gonna use more than a simple Truggy. Also when you first start out you will Probably burn up more than normal... A bit of a learning curve if you will. It just takes a little practice and patience.

When you first start brazing remember that adding more solder than just what you need to wet the joint just fills the tube. It doesn't make it stronger.

I have the mini oxy torch I use propane and oxy. I use brass rod and flux, I’m too cheave to use silver solder. I am experimenting with aluminum brazing but don’t have it down pat yet. |
