Another random weekend project. A cord anchor for my laptop so it doesn't slide off of the back side of the table when I unplug it. |

I ran a sheet metal laser in a shop for a few years. 5' x 10' Mazak machine, 8kw. Good for 1" steel, 1/2" stainless, and 1/4" (sometimes 3/8") aluminum depending on grade and cut quality you're after. It had a sheet loader and unloader as well. Million dollar setup! For a home sized unit, like a 3' x 3' table, you would want 2kw to do 1/4" steel and 1/8" stainless and 1/8" aluminum if you're lucky. Ballpark $150k... |

I've been wanting to try this for a few years now, thought they'd make a cool little project. |

Last night I decided that the receiving end was much more interesting to look at. Needs a few tweaks but it's a good prototype. I've got some delrin and aluminum coming this weekend to make a dozen or so of these pencil holders to sell. If you want one, lmk. |

And then I thought it would be cool if it would spin... |

Final product. Sold nearly all of the aluminum versions before they were even done. Came out super nice. The delrin version is being a bit tricky to get right. I wanted to get rid of the tooling marks, but this stuff doesn't really like to be scuffed or buffed. Rubbing it down with 0000 steel wool left it clean and smooth, but it turned a hazy grey. This is after experimenting with some car wax. Not too bad, kinda looks like brushed and blued steel. |

Have you tried heat/flame polishing ? I have no idea if it works well on delrin but I have had success on many other types of plastic.

Actually, I did give flame polishing a try. It's not nearly as easy as poly or lexan, but it will produce a shine. Really hard to get consistent though, and I couldn't help but kill every sharp angle I got close to. I'll upload some pics when I'm back on my laptop. In the end I just recut the surfaces with a tool that had a really wide radius. That's always produced a nice smooth finish. |

A scrap wheel scuffed up with a scotchbrite pad. I let it spin in the lathe for even heat, and hit the right side with the mapp gas torch until it flashed shiny, then let it cool. Apparently there is only a slight difference between melted and on fire with this stuff, so I played it cautious. When it gets up to temp it will all of the sudden look like it's wet. When it cools it regains some of the surface imperfections, but still way better than it was. |

I wonder if some sort of solvent would smooth it out some? I don't know much about delrin but would acetone do anything to it? Might be enough to get rid of the last little micro stuff?

Weekend project. Got a buddy that wants some prototypes cut on the lathe that require one end to be round. Made of scrap and super janky, but it'll get the job done. I've been wanting one of these for a long time anyway... |

It's range is limited due to its design, and it's a bit sloppy because of how it's mounted. If this job comes through I'll take some of the proceeds and buy a better one. It's just good enough to do what needs to be done. |

There are a ton of those things out there, not too many that spin though. Kinda weird that he's doing a kick starter...

| Re: Eyeball Engineering I think people do that to minimize risk. He doesn't want to buy the aluminum and machine these things and then try to sell them for $65. This way he can get people to pay first before he decides if it's a worthy product.

The laser engraving is a nice touch, but Duuuuuuuude's has a much higher "Cool" factor.

The keybar guy is a bit of a douche from what I am told. He ripped off the keybar idea from a forum post he saw, played dumb and turned it into a big business. Many use kickstarter not for the risk factor, but simply because its a cheap source to gain publicity on a product since thousands view it daily to buy stuff...a lot of them now have goals of like $2000....but end up bringing in $200,000, as its just an advertising medium for many at this point. The danger of kickstarter now, is the chinese just camp it and steal product ideas....crap there is even a canadian guy doing it now. (there is an article out there about his business stealing ideas from kickstarter). Later EddieO |
