| taps/dies/tubing and all that to start my build
Ok so need some help here guys.. i searched but it was scattered.. so thought Id tell you what I want to do and see if you can tell me exactly what I need.. I took the skala v3 template and transfered it to paper.. started going to carboard but dont have my lid yet.. will soon once i get my lid i can mock it all up like u pro's by drawing it to scale and tinkering with frame drawings, etc... so with that... what I need to know... I have the metal (not 3mm maybe 2mm) for my frame.. for now this may work.. I will need to put the cross tubes to hold the frame pieces apart... so 1. what size tubing (OD and ID) and material to use? 2. what size tap do i need (i saw references to 3mm..will that do?) 3. if it is labeled as a 3mm tap then a 3mm x length screw is needed right? (ultra n00b question there ) im going to try and head out to the metal store today and pickup this stuff... they most likely wont have the tap or screws.. but i can hit the hobby shop for that... trying to get my tools ready.. also going to stop by and buy the 1/10th rc "CAR" that will be my base so I will lead you with this as I have a feeling somene is going to ask.. what is the function? ok it will be my FOFF - so low, light and fast.... with that.. use tube vs flat metal to seperate them? i figure tubes will keep it lighter separating the frames... |

I would just buy threaded standoffs from somewhere like mcmaster, they have tons of sizes and lengths. Search MCMaster for "standard threaded standoffs" and then on the left hit metric and then 3mm for screw size. |

Cross Tubes are easier to make in delrin and plenty strong.

I ran into a similar problem for my homemade bodiless chassis. I got 1/4od by 1/8id delrin tube but need to find the right size screws for that.

If you want to thread a 3mm hole (the most popular size for our chassis) you need a 2.5mm hole to go from. Metric threads are easy to calculate drill size for, if you are trying to tap a 3mm .5mm pitch thread then you subtract the pitch from the thread size and you are left with 2.5mm, if you want a 5mm .8mm pitch then you need a 4.2mm hole. | |
