It would be easy for me, my driveway & basement are at the same level, just uncrate the unit and slide it in!

Is it possible to take it down in pieces? My mill was designed to come apart in 3 pieces so that it can be brought into small places (although each piece was still 200+ pounds)

I could remove the table and Z-axis and spindle. But that would only take a few lbs off it in the grand scheme of things. It is a welded base, which was part of the reason I wanted this style of machine. Smaller than your Tormach, but still strong. I might just have to take a few parts off and see how much it lightens it. Right now in full trim, according to the shipping doc, it is in the 800 lb neighborhood..

Can it even fit in a doorway as it is... with some luck you could, in theory, maybe slide it into the house on moving dollies and then find a way to... CAREFULLY (cue sending GF out with some $ here...) slide it to its location... I don't see why without some elbow grease you could make it work. While dissembling may seem silly and risky... it sure beats dropping it and damaging a really really expensive part and then your in the hole more $ |

Yes, suprisingly even while sitting on the small pallet, she will go through the doors. With only about an inch and a half to spare on each side, but I won't complain about that. That is exactly why I am taking my time and getting as much planned out as I can. Going to brace the stairs for extra insurance on weight capacity, lay down some sheeting so the carpet doesn't get mangled, and then treads on the steps so we don't do any damage there. Trust me, dissasembling the machine doesn't seem silly or risky at all. I've done much more to move much less.. |

Taking it apart might not help too much in weight, but might do wonders as far as maneuverability goes. You might look into renting a stair walker for a day too...it might make things a bit less back breaking.

My plan is to take as much off as I can. I do have the really crazy idea with using the winch on the jeep, my tow strap, and a rig that goes to the top of the stair well. This is what the gf did when I mentioned it.

We havent met, but if you need a hand, I am just up the road. I might even have some simple G-code programs and some tools, like some mills and fly cutters floating around, I was a machinist.

THW, we'll have to chat some time. Tried to get the mill in the basement this weekend. Going to have to call in someone with some heavy equipment. Broke a stair climbing dolly and a steel one. The stairs will handle the machine, just can't seem to find a dolly that will do it. Going to make some calls this week and see if one of the equipment movers or a moving company will give me a hand. Need something that can go down the stairs and make it in the basement safely. Not giving up yet, that is for sure. Oh, we did consider using the winch on the Jeep, for those that wanted video. Problem is my window is 10 inches higher than the winch on the Jeep. I tried to convince this little woman this means I need 40" tall tires and one ton axles, so I got that look again LOL... I'll get pics up as soon as she is in place. |

You should be able to raise your Jeep 10 inches just by driving up on ramps, still, that way sounds iffy. How long is your stairway? Could you buy a 2X12 or similar and use something wider than your doorway and use a come a long to slide it down into the basement? |

My Dad worked for a moving company and they did a bunch of in house moves. Sometimes they only had to move stuff 6 inches away from the wall, or a panio to the basement. Most movers are slow this time of year so you might get a "good deal" if they are not swamped. I think some buddies beer and pizza might be cheaper. But not as cool as 40's on the truck

Thinking a piano mover or a local heavy equipment mover will have what I need. I still may use the jeep as an anchor for the cumalong. We'll see what this week brings. And just a FYI, she looks good on 35's, but would look great on 40's. |

Well, 3 big guys, me, 8 2x4s, lots of plywood, and battery operated lifting cart (used for moving gun safes, real safes, and pianos) and she is in the basement. Going to use an engine hoist to get her on the stand, hopefully this weekend, and be cutting soon. Getting excited now.. Just have to get ready for the comp this weekend and fix a broken Jeep too. LOL.. Oh, and get some drawings done.... |
