Default Motor Replacement Suggestions?

The stock motor in my TRX4 Sport burned up today...I guess the snorkel isn't actually functional lol. I was just wondering if anyone has a recommendation for a replacement. I'd like to keep it brushed and under $20. This will be my first upgrade/fix on this truck after 6 months of ownership. I guess that's pretty good? All responses are appreciated.

I’ve heard good things about the Holmes Hobbies ones. Pretty close to the $20 range for the sport models I believe.

Just ordered the 27t one myself. Should be here in a few days.

I have a 35T in my SCX10ii. I'm wondering why you went with a 27T?

Well it came stock with a 21t, and from what I’ve read, the HH motors are better performing anyways, so I thought 27t was a decent modest upgrade.

Am I going to regret that decision?

Come to think of it, I’m not sure if the stock XL-5HV ESC has a restriction on higher turn motors. I think the XL-5 that came in our Rustler did, if memory serves me...

The 27t Holmes 550 Trailmaster will be slower at the same gearing than the 21t Holmes 550.

The higher the number of turns, the less your ESC (and the rest of your drivetrain, for that matter) will be stressed.

Now - if you are talking the kv-rating of a motor, the higher numbers will be faster.

Now - if you change can sizes from 550 to 540, the number of turns is not equal - but again, higher number turns are slower than lower number turns.

Check out Holmes Hobbies motor charts for more examples (and note that changing from the common 3-slot to 5-slot also changes things up a bit):

I was thinking the 27t would be slower but would offer more torque. Is that correct? Glad to hear it won’t stress the Traxxas ESC.

My son is a good driver, but he’s 4, and gets carried away sometimes. And the 21t with 3s is definitely faster than he needs to be going while crawling.

1/10th Axial brushed RTRs come with 540-sized can motors.

Traxxas has used 550-sized can motors for their RTRs.

The numbers don't exactly compare - please see the chart I linked in the post above for equivalencies...

Thanks for attaching the chart! I think I’ll be happy either way. Honestly, the stock motor isn’t all that bad to begin with...

The 27t would definitely be a great choice for an inexperienced driver!
