Yeah we would but these are my brothers wheels and tires we just kinda borrowed for the run. But now that I have the 40 series Moab tires waiting to be installed on my Clod. I'm sure that it won't be long till Soya buys some Moabs.

Sorry for digging up an old thread. I am building a crawler based on yours and was wondering if I could get some close ups of the point where your middle links meet. Also if you would like to inlcude any other photos you think would help with the building of my first crawler. By the way great crawler. |

One last question and I should be set to go. How exactly are your shocks mounted to the links? I have heard of people using cable clamps but it looks like you are using something different.

1/4 cable clamps and 1/4 set screw collars on each side of the clamp to lock it in place.

Hey Mnster, just so's you'll know, that 3X3 chassis has inspired the beginning of another build....I'l be starting mine shortly. BTW....the 1/4" lock collars are no problem to find....but the "cable clamps ?" I haven't found yet, McMaster Carr? Is there possibly another nomenclature they are known by ?:? Look in any local hardware store in the electrical department. You'll find what you need. http://www.acehardware.com/product/i...archId=1304463 Last edited by Mnster; 02-19-2006 at 10:28 AM. |

| Torque Roll Issues
First off, great work on your crawler project here. Nothing like biulding your own from scratch is there? I have a similar car that I've built out of spare parts in the last month but have run into a snag. Do you have problems with the torque of the drive lines twisting your truck? My My 4 link setup torque rolls so bad it "crabs" and roll steers when I apply power. I have to keep the front wheels turned all the time just to drive forward! I have checked all the link lengths and my trig more than once, the chasis is straight and the camber of the wheels is good. I'm running a home made chasis, links, and suspention; a 55 turn lathe motor, 72/18 drive, and both the diffs are locked. I'd appreciate any advice you can give me. |

Sorry to snipe but sounds like your truck is too high. If you can, lower it and stiffen your shocks. Add 50 to 60 wt oil.

Yes Soya and I have this same issue as well. Lowering the truck did help a lot with the balance, torque twist, and rollovers. However, the chassis still has large amounts of torque twist when climbing large hills. I would think the reasons for the torque twist would be the high center of gravity, the link mounted shocks, and the huge weight of the truck. The 15" wheel base just is not enough anymore. Now that most of the people we rock crawl with run about 17" it needs a little updating. However, Soya and I didn't really build the truck to rock crawl at a comp level. Soya uses his truck as a mud truck, puddle jumper, general bashing machine. Which is why we have most of the stuff mounted high on the truck. Last edited by Mnster; 02-21-2006 at 01:53 PM. |

Thanks for the feedback. I tried using suspention limiting straps today made from fishing leaders. Helps some but I think further tweaking of the springs will hopefully help cure the problem. As far as wheel base, my truck has an 18 inch wheel base, it sounds too long, but it is a 5.75 scale 104 inch wheel base and 39 inch tires using standard monster truck tires. When I get the bugs worked out, I'll post some pictures. Thanks again guys. |

| Torque roll Fixed for now
I have an update on the torque roll issue!! First off, I took RC Hunter's advice and lowered the truck. My lower links are sitting at around 10 to 15 degrees above horizontal. I'm using standard T-Maxx shocks and the red springs. The truck torque rolls to the left so I use a much heavier spring on the left rear to help stabilize the roll. I added a little fuel line to the push rod of the shock to prevent the internals from bottoming out and blowing the shock. The truck basically sits on the fuel line when the shocks are fully compressed (which is most of the time). I'm using 5 inch fishing leaders as travel limiting straps to keep the front end from over extending and allowing my chasis raise up (raise the center of gravity) and flip the truck. The fishing leaders test at (I think) 40 pounds. This seems to help the most in hill/rock climbing. The rear of the truck suspention travels unihibited. The chasis weight fallows the stable front suspention whereas the rear provides for most for the articulation. Each setup is different, but I think this will help out anyone with driveline / torque roll issues. |
