Default It's time, VP Builders kit Build

Wife got me a builders kit for Christmas, been ordering bits the last few weeks for it.

Brass portal covers

Aluminum bits for transmission (be here tomorrow)

Machined transfer case gears

Caught the limited edition NSDRC RS800 available over new years so grabbed one.

Getting a Fusion Pro 2300kv I think. Though debating on robbing the AXE 2100 out of the knightrunner and putter her back to Holmes brushed.

Last night finally cracked this project open finally.

Plan was a C1 portal rig build cause they just changed the rules around big time for this year. After assembling the chassis I was holding in my hand going "Houston we have a big f-ing problem, this is built like a tank, going to be too heavy"

I was tossing another idea around as to go a scale build direction so now plan B it is. I kind of like plan B better anyway. Let the "little orange monster" do what she was built for even if it means last place.

Tonight got the axles assembled, figured it was time to start the thread.

Where this build is headed I'm keeping behind the curtain for the moment. Let's just say the Orange taco and the tan C2 hilux body were good learning experiences and time to take it up a notch, or a few.

Wheels, I have some rc4wd 1.9 Black rhino wheels I had on the knightrunner till the Toycoma wheels came out. Gonna clean them up and make use of the things I paid too much money for.

I did have one "oops". So the builders kit frame bag is the frame kit for the axial based build, I didn't know this, so I assembled it and was staring at it like "there ain't no way that transmission is going in there and that's not where the battery should be" ya, so I downloaded the Phoenix manual lol.

Only hint I'll give is as usual, it is Toyota related.

Tonight got the axles built!

That skid is for the 3-gear transmission, I assume you have a VFD transmission. You will need the VFD skid plate set. Nice servo.

Ya I caught that dumb mistake on my part. I was following bag instructions, once I got that far I realized something ain't right. Aka I downloaded the Phoenix instructions and basically started over tonight with assembling the frame lol.

The body is a suprise. Not letting that cat out of the bag ahead of time. Will be a Toyota.

And yes, yes they do. Funny thing, put that outfit on my wife and you'd think I 3d scanned her and printed a scale version. Even my wife saw the resemblance when she came off the printer....

Decent progress, had the crew pretty busy the last couple days.

Trans done, locked out the dig, thats what overdrive is for lol.

Decided to rob the AXE out of the knightrunner. Still had to sand off a bit of the link mount.

Tires my buddy gave me apparently were glued on one bead...don't know wtf but can't use them, won't seat. So for now have set of 4.75 rock beasts

Found the black rhino wheel have too much neg offset for the brass knuckles, so ordered some different hexes to give me just enough clearance. I had expected a company like FAIF to be a bit more attentive than that. Have the brass much thicker and thus the screws a few mm out further on the top 2.

Hoping to have a roller tonight so I can move on to CAD work and printing. But I needed the "roller" to get exact measurements.

AND WE HAVE A ROLLER.

Think I dropped a shim out of the OD drive for the front though when I was making sure everything lined up, feels like it's got serious drag when in "nuetral" position.

Also found another baby crawler that was being abandoned on my way home from crawling today lol. Buddy asked if I wanted it cause he doesn't use it. Makes 6.

Now it's CAD and printing time.

Be sweet if I have this ready by weekend of March 10th for an event but we shall see.

Little sneak peek. Don't want to rush the finish so not going to make it by the event in 2 weeks. Printer I ran the body on had a couple fits I had to sort out, took a bit to find and fix it (bad roller) cause the quality issue didn't seem like that was the cause still getting some imperfections in layer line pic. Pic with engine bay showing was the fast print for test fit and such. Second pic is the cab reprinted with printer fixed.

Bed sides just finished Saturday, still working on bed floor. Then interior and so on.

That looks very nice, the detail is awesome. How much does that weigh comparatively? How do you get a program for that?

Cad files available for purchase on various websites. I put into Tinker CAD from there to modify them to what I need. Like the engine bay and bobbing the bed. Engine bay was files I modified to fit the build. Once done there put them into a slicer program that turns the cad files into a file that 3d printers read to start building the layers.

They are heavier than injection molded but it's marginal depending on the body. Doing a build like this one isn't worried about being as light weight as possible. Thats a competition level issue which I'm not doing with this build.

So after having to heavily change gears and get the knightrunner make over done, I was able to get back at this now.

First round, some progress pics. Went from state of last set of pictures to this to about finished in a a little over a week

And now the good stuff. All finished except for the decals, scale recovery bits and headache bar. Button it up tomorrow night. Still gotta design a snorkel, forgot all about it lol.

Did a short test drive in the back yard just to make sure everything works, all good.

Batter sits in the toolbox in the bed. 4200mah LiHV 3s shorty. Biggest pack that'll fit I think. But my favorite packs, what I use in the knightrunner.

Damn you're impatient

I'll get pics up tonight. And have a ton of video clips too courtesy of my wife, those will be on FB. She made sure to get my couple of screw ups too.

Alright pic time!

Gotta say LOVE THIS RIG!!!

One problem, it's way too easy to drive compared to my IFS rigs. So used to them that I drive that way, so this thing isn't effected by much. Cleared pretty much everything I could throw at it!
