My Hitec 225 has been working fine for a long time. I got the one with plastic gears. No issues and I believe it was around $18.
Pick up a servo saver while your at the LHS.

I agree with Hobine, my 225 has been working flawless for 6 months now. Any servo will work perfect for a shift servo as long as your end points are set properly and of course you shift while moving or at least rotating

Agreed. I've been plagued by the infamous shift servo failure. Rather then continue to possibly burn out future factory units, I decided to use a hitec hs-225bb mighty mini, not water proof but strong and durable for little pocket change! So far with epas set its been working great. I did have to convert the shift arm since the mini has a different tooth count than the factory one, so that is something to consider. Hope this helps!

I burned out both the stock shift servo and a hitec 225BB after a few packs each.
I've run through 15 packs now without problems after greasing the transmission and putting in a full size servo, the grease helped the most.
I used a traxxas 2075 servo. It's Cheap, waterproof, and it has plenty of torque for the job. It's mounted a SCX10 servo plate to mount with with one extra hole.
