Default Drag brake setting for mix of crawling and racing

What is the best range of drag brake settings for a mixture of crawling and rock racing, percentage wise? What settings do you guys use and why (what conditions and style of running? )

There was an earlier thread that discussed the benefits of "proportional drag braking" such that as speed increases, drag braking decreases. Given that that is a still future feature, has anyone come up with a reasonable facsimile work around to accomplish a similar result ?
