Awesome thread guys! I just got a quick question. Im building a rc body former for my ax10 and i need to know the thickness of a regular rock crawling polycarbonate/lexan body. I was thinking maybe around .06" ish?

i just thought i would say thanks for helpin.. i am finaly gettin some answers and it helps alot. i have decided to build my own scale frame instead of buyin one. i was also tryin a droop setup and wanted to see i someone could tell me how to set the ride hight, my ax-10 sits to low and if i put spacers in i lose alot of travel.

Most good, thick bodies such as Proline's are .060 Lexan. Other bodies are generally .040 or there abouts...

Well, if you're going to build a scaler, you'll probably want less flex, less ride height, and shorter shocks (or limited shocks) to make the thing look and perform like a scaler. Droop in scalers is pretty easy to set up, but you'll have to have the body, wheels and tires you want all picked out. Then you set the ride height so that the tires just clear the body, as with droop your suspension will only travel down from there...

Post some pics, it'll be easier to see what you've got going on...

Crawler builds are unlike any other type of of R/C car kit build. A healthy dose of engineering/imagineering/ adaption/improvisation is a must if you want a better than average performing rig.

How much are you planning on spending?

What are you building/fabrication skills like?

Intended usage: playing around in the back yard or serious competition?

What are the typical surface/course conditions where you are planning on running?

What are the design objectives for your build: durability?, low weight?, etc.

What is your driving style?

Plan on spending what ever it takes.

I can assemble anything. Dont have the equipment to fabricate from raw materials though.

Playing around in the backyard, but might do more with it once I see whats up. I mostly just like building stuff and pushing the limits of what I build.

I live in south Louisiana, there are no rocks here. lol So who knows. lol

Like the idea of durabilty but I want an effective crawler.

Havnt done any rock crawling at all so we will see what my driving style will develop into. :)

Laughing at the "spending whatever it takes" comment. Maybe it should be the other way around and you adopt me!!

Saw your post about pre-ordering an XR-10. A good choice if you're willing to wait a bit.

The tweaking and upgrading will come naturally after you have driven your rig for awhile and broken a few parts.

While you're waiting for the XR-10 to come in you now have the luxury of time to research your electronics choices.

With respect to motors and electronic digs: I'm not a MOA (motor on axle guy) so I will defer to others as far as opinions/advice goes in that regard.

On the subject of radios the only advice I will offer is to look at a good 3 or 4 channel 2.4 Ghz radio. The likely choices are a Spektrum DX3R or Futaba 4pk. The reason I say 4 channels is I'm unsure if you would need a 4th channel for the cutting brakes....others feel free to comment. We have a local guy here that uses 2 speed controls + the channel mixing capability of his radio to implement the dig function.

Other than that, TIRES. This is where you are going to have to do some local research to see what works.

On the subject of fabricating/modifying parts, many things are done using nothing more than a ruler, hacksaw, hand drills, and hand files. A band saw and drill press are nice to have, and if you own a milling machine, well, the world's your oyster. I've found that my toolbox has slowly expanded as the tasks at hand presented themselves.....things like taps, number drills, digital caliper angle gauge, etc.

this is what i have

i found the newbright jeep rubicon body at radio shack for 30$ (was a return) goin to run 2.2 flatirons because i like the way they look with the body, didnt like the 1.9s . i know its not scale if i run 2.2s but its my first build. started buildin a frame based on my daughters scx-10 also started buildin an exo for the body. using my ax-10 for running gear and parts.

tryin to figure out how to post pics, i will get them up asap"thumbsup"
 
2.2's on a small body looks scale... Im sure theres someone out there who put 54 boggers or something on a jeep tj... Im sure they didnt do so without rockwells or something, but its had to of been done... use www.photobucket.com for pictures "thumbsup"

I've seen everything from 54's on a jeep to sixties on a ford f-350. You're tire choice should look fine. Both the 1:1 and 1:10 are creative hobbies and its all in what your mind and check book can build. :ror:

Integy 55t motor tech. question??

I've got 2 questions about the integy 55t motor. does this 55t need to have the timing changed before installing. not to long ago I put a 55t motor in my Axial, when I went to test it, it acted like it had no power, or like a battery was going dead. is this normal for this motor. I didn't know how to adjust the timing. also, looking at the end bell, there are 4 tabs, and couldn't tell which was the correct post. does this motor need adjusting timing?, or can it be installed, and go crawl. I had also put 14t pinion,87 spur, w/ a 7.2 nihm 3600. the battery was charged, and the connections were solid. I removed it and put the stock 27t back in. when I attempted to try the 55t again, when it got reinstalled, it ran for about 30 sec, sparked & smoked :flipoff:( needless to say it found the trash):flipoff:. I'd like to go to a higher wound motor,45 or 55t. a 11t pinion in it now. I just don't see a reason to put in any thing higher than those. i'm going to be putting either in. I'm leaning more towards the 45t. If some one has a good used(budget) brushed motor for sale, i'd might be interested, provided the price is fair. & the leads are attached. thanks, Mike

The Lathe motors should be neutral timed out of the package. I've run dozens of them , and NEVER adjusted the timing. You may have gotten a bad one or something, that happens, it is not normal. As for the smoking- again it sounds like a dud motor. Was it a V11 integy? We had many problems with those, where as the regular $20 integy's are usually great.

noob clod build

im building a hustler chassis with clod axles.i have a pair of 10t pinion gears and integy 55 turn motors.when i installed the pinions there is way to much lash.what tooth do i need to install?i am on a very very limited budget.i am not working at this time.so i cant afford a pair of adjustable motor mounts.im trying to trade my pinions for larger ones on rcu.thanks for any info.

I cant recall the smallest pinion you can run in a stock clod gear housing, but if I had to guess I'd say it'll be like 14 tooth. If you have a hobby shop near you, you might be able to take the truck in and try on different pinions to see which meshes properly. I'd also suggest you go to tamiyausa.com and take a peek at the Clod manual. It'll say how many teeth the stock pinion has, and you'll get good mesh with that.

Ideas for finding a teacher?

Hi all of you out there... I was wondering if you might have tips on finding a mentor/teacher type person for my 10 year old son, someone local who would teach him how to build rc cars, crawlers and stuff in person? Someone I could PAY to do this? We live in Berkeley California. Any good ideas how to find a person like that?
