Cutting a motor commutator & motor tweaks

I have over 1000 teardowns still.... And probably around 2500 armatures unwound.... I probably have a good 300+ arms already wound....

And yes we will be offering all our normal services from motor rebuilds to motor zapping...

We are going to be coming out with two new motors.... New can and endbell designed just for crawling.... Arms will still be sagami like we use now.... There is a third motor in the works that I am designing based on a request from jp...

Whats the shank size on the cutters for the lathes? Just ordered a new Xipp lathe and am placing an order today from mcmaster for other so can't wait for the lathe. Figured I'd get some spare bits.

I figured they were small. I think I'm going to experiment with some of the custom ground HSS tools I have too. Usually when I machine copper (on 1:1 lathes:ror I use HSS because of the sharper edge.

fiddle stick is used to quantify the spring tension while the springs are installed on the motor. Ive got the cheaper trinity version and added some additional marks to get a finer reading.

Try it on a laydown brush and you will get more sparks than power :lmao:

Its not too bad when the throttle is babied, but when you have drag brake kicking and a lot of direction changes (like trying to roll over in a comp) it will wear that sucker out FAST!

The reason we cut on certain brushes was that they screwed up the comm pretty bad, so you motor would not be making as much power as it could.....doesn't mean it would not run, just not at its peak.

Typically when your motor is running not at its peak because of certain things, typically you can get premature wear in areas......the comm being the biggest offender.

One trick we used to do, was break the brushes in really good.....pull the motor apart and then cut the comm very lightly.....to just basically give it a new surface. Motors were SO fast that way! Killed motor life, cause you were basically cutting the comm twice every rebuild.

And like John said, the stuff you guys do to these motors is nothing to scoff at......CRAZY amp draws and such going on the whole time. It means little that its a 55t motor....

I know you don't wanna hear it, but you guys should REALLY be rebuilding these motors more often than you are......

I've been doing that lately. So when I give the guy his motor back, he's got brand new, just broken in brushes, and a fresh cut. Kind of gives me a chance to double check everything also.
