Cutting a motor commutator & motor tweaks

You are correct. More silver makes brushes wear faster.
Kinda what I figured as well. I did a little searching on these and they(Trinity) claimed there was an additive in these to reduce wear. Probably just a sales pitch.:roll:

Anyway for a buck a pair I'll throw them in some old motors till they are gone:mrgreen:
 
my understanding was the silver brushess were a harder material.

harder= less brush wear and more comm wear.

harder = more speed
softer = less speed
I dont know if the silver brushess are softer or harder than stock
but you can do a hardness test pretty easily.

I have some silver brushess coming and will compare.
not only a hardness test but to see if the harder brush[silver/stock]
really does=more speed.

on another topic for just a moment
how would you suggest I remove the magnets safly from the can and replace?

^^^ Silver is softer. I posted about those brushes because I was not familiar with that particular brush. Silver would be easier on the comm but would have to be replaced more often. Comm trueness would help a bunch on this. I.E. an untrued Integy motor plus silver brushes equals downtime.

I read some from big jim and he said that HIGH content silver brushes produce more power but are HARDER on the comm?

Yeah but you have to remember that racing motors and crawler motors live very different lives. You'll get much more mileage out of a silver brushed crawler motor than you would a racing motor.
 
A lot to consider as well everything Big Jim referred to is racing apps. Hammered down WOT for 5 minutes plus. A crawler won't see this much abuse in general. Racers will build 20:1 over a crawler. I wished Jim would have been around in this crawler age.

I just assumed the silver must have been a harder material from what I was reading.

but I will perform a hardness test when I get a chance.
 
could be,I dont have the book but somewhere I found a link once on here somewhere and did alot of reading.just going off what I remember


and would really like input/advice on removing the magnets

I think it was run the Silver on the positive side to get more power, then run the regular brush on the negative side to let it lube the comm, plus you can run a softer spring on the negative side.

True. That is why I posted the Trinity XXXs. They claimed to have more Lube additives in that particular brush, hence the high ass price.

I think we're all on the same page, just hard to come across through a keyboard. Anyway a lot of good info here. Even though we have jacked EeePees' thread:mrgreen:
