Dual rear shocks set up?

Ive been a SCT and MT owner for a while and just recently bought my first Scale trk. Rock Racing looks fun so im looking to set up for that (not so much crawling).
I was wondering what's the preferred set up for rear shocks? I've seen a couple different set ups.

4 shocks with identical springs on all 4 shocks.
4 shocks with different 2 different rate springs.
4 shocks with springs only on 2 shocks.

Is there truly a difference or is it just for looks. I imagine you could achieve the same results with a dual setup compared to a quad (with the right setup).
 
I can't see an advantage to four shocks in the rear unless you have a hugely heavy rig and you need to get more spring under there to keep it off of the ground.

The downsides:
- added friction
- added weight
- fewer tuning options (ie locating the shocks for progressive effect)
- cost
- tuning complexity

The last one can be addressed by only have one spring per side, and only one of the shocks filled with oil.
 
I recently put a set of proline XT on the rear of my yeti, using the out of the box spring setup with 30 weight oil. I don't see a use for a dual shock setup running these shocks other than the looks. I'm still tuning them, but using both forward mounts (upper and lower) they seem a bit stiff. Instead of squat and dig, I get wheelies. I'm running a Tekin pro4 HD 3500 on 3s.

I tried this dual shock setup for one battery back, I had powerstoke Xts in most forward holes on the trailing arm and upper mount, and stock shocks behind those but without springs. It lowered the rear alittle bit and limited the droop. It drove OK and looked way way cool. Looks just like a real trophy truck with that shiny piston and blue bits in the back.. but I ended up just using the proline shocks alone. Just works better and I have them setup in the most vertical mounting holes for the most droop and softer overall feel. The front still needs to be stiffer but I have some springs coming to try in the front including the axial superstiff 14x54 one.
