ECX Barrage upgrades

I didnt realize the old Losi motors were so rare. I have several. Aren't they just slot car motors?

I have a good collection myself from all these years. I have a micro hoarding problem haha.
I believe slot car motors are typically 130 can big blocks like what was used in Mini Z, Xmod & Micro RS4. The Losi specific motors are what's rare not the size & spec. The Losi motors and the similar and even harder to find atomic BB motors are desired because they can be rewound.

Here is a picture of the current setup on my Barrage. Re purposed the o ring to tie batteries to the servo, works plenty good. I wanted to get more weight in the front of the rig for climbing purposes.

This is going to sound retarded but how the hell did you get the o-ring off of the rear? Im going to just velcro mine to the front but I want the dam o-ring gone but don't want to just cut it.

Mine just came right out if I recall. Just look where it's caught and pull it out.

^^ Yup, pretty straight forward.

The only way to get the motors is to send Dan Tryon aka Danally a Losi micro motor to be rewound. The motors are discontinued so you'd have to search for one. None of the other motors in this size can be rewound. like the ECX temper for example.

Danally hasn't logged on since 2016 unless he has a new username. I was thinking of contacting him for another set of hand made wheels if he still did them.

What makes the Losi motors special and rebuildable? I've got several 130 and 180 sized motors that look like they have the same fiber piece on the end. And I have some 540s that are rebuildable and tunable that screw together but I'm too busy(lazy) to get into it enough to actually do it.

He doesn't do the wheels anymore. It's possible he may have leftovers, but I think they are gone.
I'm not sure what makes the Losi motors easy to wind, maybe something with the wire and the armature.
He can do some styles of 130 and 180 motors if they are able to be rebuilt like the PN racing motors.
The 130 "Big Blocks" and 180 "Strokers" are beastly

He pops up the the micro rock crawler group on FB sometimes.

Can anyone who has one of these tell me what the width is hex to hex on these axles? I’m curious if they are narrower than the Sumo axles.

I had the exact measurements written down somewhere. I'll look again tomorrow, but they are nearly the exact same width at about 4". Maybe a mm or two difference between them. The Barrage axles are pretty similar to summo axles. The ring gear is identical and can even be swapped, though being the same it doesn't gain anything. The pinion isn't the same tooth count, but won't swap without mods.

I keep a running list in my notepad on my iPhone of axle widths. I got the 1/24 Barrage listed at 102mm which basically 4”. I don’t have the Sumo’s.

Hi
Can anyone tell me if the new tranny of the gelande II 1/18 can fit in the barrage? It’s 3,5 mm wide

I didn't have time to measure last night or before work today, but I remembered I did a breakdown of the sumo about 7 years ago haha.
"redcat axles measure out to 104mm outside of tire to tire. 79mm from the flat side of the hub to the other"
I believe when I said hub that's without hex. I don't usually measure to the hex because like wheels, offset may vary.

I already broke down the ecx and counted the gears, and took a bunch of pictures. I was going to do an updated compatibility guide soon.

Fwiw the 1/24 ECX barrage axle ring gear is 24T the pinion is 12T for a ratio of 2
The sumo ring gear is also 24T ,and the pinion is 13T for a 1.85 ratio
Interestingly the Sumo & Barrage ring gear will swap fine in the housings and on the axle, but being identical it wouldn't have any benefit. The 12T & 13T pinion gears however don't swap.
The higher axle ratio seem an odd choice since they call it a crawler and clearly could have gone lower like the Sumo.

Found a note from April 2016 when I built my Fungi Goat from a Trail Trekker donor. If anyone hasn’t checked his website I’d suggest to take a look. I don’t know where he measured to but I’m sure it was the same for all of them. Although the Orlandoo doesn’t use a hex. He’s got a good DIY for making links also.

Axle Width Comparison
Sumo – 3.33″ (85mm)
Trekker – 3.08″ (78mm)
McRC – 2.83″ (72mm)
Orlandoo – 2.21″ (56mm)

Thank up all for responding. That’ll help a lot! It looks like they could be just slightly narrower which would make World’s of difference!

It fits between the rails fine but you will have to fab some vertical tabs to bolt it up. The links connect to the stock skid plate. Or you could fab some new link mount points and put the RC4WD tranny between the rails.

I may be confused here, but if the barrage has a 12t pinion, and sumo a 13t, and they have same ring gear, wouldn't the barrage be geared lower, more crawler oriented?

Correct, that's what I get for rushing haha.
I have a few more breakdown and comparison pictures of the transmission and gears I'll post after work.

Do you know what the reduction is on the gelande transmission to even know if its a benefit?
