ECX Barrage upgrades

I have a hobbyking 5 gram outrunner in mine with an 8 tooth pinion. it greatly improves it yes, but i dont know if im totally satisfied with it or not.

did someone try to use a 7 teeth pinion with the stock motor? like this for example https://shop.kkpmo.com/product_info.php?info=p369_gearwheel-pinion-m0-3---7teeth.html
That should reduce the speed enugh to crawl a bit better imho.

thats a great find. From the looks of it, that should work as well. 9 tooth works well, 7 tooth will likely need the motor slots made bigger, but should work otherwise.

You may be thinking of the RC4WD D90 thread where people have been looking for am alternative to the stock D90 motor. Some have used a servo motor (forgot which servo) with great success.

The truth is, if you want to use a servo for the transmission, you can use the board inside the servo as the speed control too. Maybe that's what Spoo is talking about. I used to do that in 1/87 scale TTT trucks. Best micro ESC available is the board inside a servo "thumbsup"

There is one posted on one of the micro facebook groups using a motor out of a servo on the trans. i dont know what servo it was out of though...

Did you use the new transmission or not? In some pictures it looks like you did, then in the one right before the body pics it looks like you didn't. Not only that but why did you swap. Is the new transmission lower gearing?

Yes I use the new transmisión just the photo of the first mock up it’s with the original motor. Sorry for the confusion
Very pleased with the new tranny

A 7t pinion would be to small IMO. Even if you found one with a 1.5mm hole it wouldn't he very durable. I think someone around here has even said he's broken 8t pinions. I'd personally stick with 9t

As far as "Drone" motors, yes an out runner can work, it's been done on the barrage and other Micro crawlers, the one posted however is way to large.

nice to know the 7t-8t brass pinions break under stress before ordering them, thx :)
so, to fit the 9t, is it direct fit or does it still need some grind to adjust pinion/spur?

Well you would need a whole new motor plate. The factory motor plate is plastic and molded to the transmission housing. If you cut off the part the motor bolts to and tried to make a new plate the spacing may be off and it doesn't look like a 130 motor will sit in the factory location. But that may not be a huge issue. If it was built like the Losi/Ambush/ECX Temper transmission it would be easier to mount a 130 motor, but swapping to one of those transmissions means less reduction making it even faster possibly with less low end control.
A 130 motor is still doable, just will have to be done differently

I was not able to see only the motor plate, so would that mean I have to get the whole thing https://www.horizonhobby.com/transmission-assembled--1-24-4wd-barrage-ecx202032

would this be the one 130 to get?
PN Racing Mini-Z PNWC 70 Turn Ball Bearing Motor

This one is only rated for 3v wonder if it can handle 2s
https://hobbyking.com/en_us/130-size-brushed-torque-tuned.html

would that motor and temper trans be a easier swap? or it would still be to fast

I've already discussed the motor plate above. The Temper trans looks like it may be the same gearing as the Losi Micro and would make the barrage faster, not slower.
Either motor should be fine... however like I said none if this stuff just bolts up. It's going to take more work than even a Trekker or Losi micro crawler

So after doing the bearing upgrade. I doubt your fitting a 130. Due to how the motor is molded into the trans it is not a flat mounting surface. Theres a raised section and I highly doubt anything larger is going to fit in that area. Your best bet is a different transmission to make the motor upgrade work. That or a really long shaft so you can use some sort of spacers to outspace the raised part.

I think it’s really from them being thin when trying to push them onto the shaft. I am considering giving a 7t a go from that website, you can get extra length, which should help it from snapping.

I was hoping they sell the plate separate I don't feel like wasting $20 experimenting.

O well I guess I would leave it as is once it arrives.

Thanks!

Savox makes a water proof version with about the same ounce torque power for the same price. Thats what I plan on getting when i decide whether or not im sticking with the mini or going 1/10th.

Is this the savox you are talking about?
SAVOX

it is a bit wider and I dont know if it will fit fine as SH-0263MG does...

Those servo do look nice but not sure 5x $ as nice.
I might get the ones from Banggood and give them a try.

Some conformal coating dielectric grease and you are good to go.

Maybe someone should do a rock racer type build with the barrage. Since they have “fast” axles (like the redcat sumo) and a “fast” tranny (like the trail trekker), they don’t have much low end control right? Why not throw on scrambler 1.0 tires, a strong servo and a custom tube chassis?

Sounds good. You have my permission to proceed with these plans.
