HH Cobalt Puller- Reborn page 35!

I am a HUGE fan of these smaller Cobalt motors....I run a pair of original 454 18t motors in my comp XR10 and really like them a lot. I look forward to when these new small Cobalt motors are available. I definitely will be buying some. "thumbsup"

I had a few minutes to work on designing the next part of the Puller line, Sealed endbells! If I am going to design the endbell, might as well make it the kind we need most on the first shot. I just laid out the general shape and clearances. I have not checked draft angles yet. There will be two little holes to pass the wire out of the endbell. Right now I am not settled on a fully enclosed version VS one with a little hole in the back to help remove the bearing. What do you think?

I may pop one of these out in carbon fiber or kevlar tube just for giggles. It would look swank!
I'd say put the hole in it. We can always plug the hole and remove the plug later to get the bearing out.

Any chance of these being ready this week so I can put one in Guido next week for NWSC?
 
The Puller motor is a brand line, doublej. It is a brand that focuses on having higher performance to weight ratio without sacrificing low speed control. The downside is generally a higher cost.


I'll be building some 540 puller protos over the next few work days, and if I can duplicate the excellent startup we have created on the 500 series we will try to get a few ready for the Scale Nats. It really depends on how much work I have waiting when I get back on Thursday, I only have a week before leaving again. If I can get the first one right, knocking out a few more won't be a big deal. Since I already have 12 previous protos built that didn't work so well, I have a very good idea of what to do on the next one to make it work "thumbsup"



We got about four hours of Puller 500 testing time at USRCCA nats, and let everybody drive them that wanted to. The feedback was overall very great, and the performance surprised even me! Even at the speed of a 23t motor on 3s they ran extremely cool and had plenty of stall torque. After 40 minutes of climbing and bashing (1300mah) they were barely above ambient temp! We could work on increasing drag strength (or just use Holmes Hold), I already have a Build of Materials ready to accomplish the goal and test. Even in the current state they are a very good motor however, so we will knock out a few more protos and begin alpha production ASAP. Any refinements will be running changes with backwards and forwards compatibility of parts 8)

Better ditch that sig line then:flipoff: Unreal how sweet these motors are especially for protos. These will be in my rig for sure for the 2013 season If not sooner:mrgreen:

Yes please! I'm in for a pair of the baddest (or at leasr close to it) 500 ish motors for a MOA!

I've been wrong before but I think we're looking at the biggest advancement in rc rock crawler motors in a LOOOOOOOOOOONNNNNGGGG time! 540 based, cheap, very customizable, and just as powerful in the same package, just smaller.

I'm chomping at the bit to see these available.
 
I wrung one out in a wraith this past weekend at Scale Nats. So far I have 10 hours on the motor without any performance loss and hardly any brush wear. I'll be taking apart later today and posting some pics.


We had a little delay with building, the faceplates bearing pocket wasn't quite sized right. I'll be plugging away at the next motors as fast as I can so we can get production rolling!
 
I hung out with John for quite a while on Friday while he ran that motor in his Wraith. I was really impressed with the startup, low speed control, punch, and drag brake. If this motor isn't perfect I don't know how you can get much closer. "thumbsup"
 
have you made a decision on if you're going to make a fully enclosed version? I haven't ran a brushed motor in awhile. I'd consider going back now. Nice work John (Rubs your head) the kevlar version sounds OPPAGANGNAMSTYLE!
 
I'll be making an enclosed version for sure. The 500 will be more difficult to seal up in a production version, the 540 will be easier.
 
Pulled the motors apart for a bit of repair. With 10 hours of abuse I wore though about 13% of the comm, as shown in the pic. Holmes Copper brushes were ready for replacement. Motor speeds are about like a 25t TorqueMaster, maybe a bit faster. People were slamming the rig forwards and reverse, and generally driving without abandon to test them to the limits. Even in a Wraith on 4s (a solid 4 hours worth in 1 hour increments) geared 87/15 didn't come close to overheating the motor, although I'm sure it could happen with certain drivers or terrain.

Say hello to the first version armatures for the Puller 500, fresh from a beatdown!
