HH Cobalt Puller- Reborn page 35!

Why were the old cobalt pullers discontinued? how would these new compare to the old 7t's?

The old puller tooling was scrapped for metal. The 500s will be smaller, lighter, and less power than the old 7t version.

do you have a date yet?

I have a shipment of magnets that will be the crux of offering them to the general public. Should be 6 weeks.
 
Building a few more prototypes for the team whilst we wait for the next big shipment of magnets. I was eyeballing the endbell retaining ring and knocked another 1/2 gram off it.

Also just built up the Flow type Puller 500. It weighs .2 ounces (about 6 grams) heavier than the Crawl version, but the drag and torque is much better. Similar to the TorqueMaster VS the Crawlmaster motor. Total weight 4.6 ounces, 131 grams. There is still a good 3 to 5 grams I could knock off the motor still, but we are working towards a production motor and not a weight weenie version. We can always go weight weenie for people that want it during the build.


Getting closer and closer to production on these. I may be able to open the door for 5 sets of Flow Pullers in the next two weeks.

You can see the filaments of the fiberglass on the timing rings. It is pretty tough to get a good machined edge on them, but that is also why they hold threads much better than CF!

I have officially secured the lamination and commutator suppliers for the original Puller motors, so we will be able to duplicate the design with more up to date parts and continued support! Please give thanks to Bob Boucher for sharing his contacts and knowledge, and send your prayers his way as his age is catching up to him and health is declining.


Four more prototype armatures coming my way in three and five slot, and a modified version of the original SEVEN slot armature is being added to the lineup shortly. In the 500 size we will have three slot, five slot, and seven slot designs available. The five and seven slot will be cross compatible in can, the three slot design will probably have it's own can for startup reasons. I am shooting for a final design that is easily and affordably adjustable between 4 ounces to 5 ounces depending on the torque requirement needed.




I'm super excited about the new armature development, as the one proto I have built with the 7 slot design has the BEST startup of all the motors I have built over the past few years! Surprisingly it actually weighs a few grams less than the 5 slot version! Now I finally feel that we are really getting somewhere with all the work and effort put into it, and can rest easy knowing that I will be able to continue our product line on a higher standard than seen before.



I knew that taking an "easy" week would pay off "thumbsup"
 
Sounds good John, glad to see such amazing revolutionary technology coming about. Interesting to see a 3-5-7 slot comm in such a small package. I'm positive these will be in lots of trucks.

Man you even mention brushes in my Local Shop they stare in awe that brushed motors exist and have demand. Probably them realizing all the money they had they just threw away when the brushless motors took over.
 
Here is a Prototype set of 16t Puller 500 Flow type in Rasta for JHall! These weighed in at 257.3 grams for the set, a few grams heavier than normal because of the higher copper fill. He will be dropping 3.2 ounces as compared to the CrawlMasters currently in the rig. It would be a 4 ounce reduction from a set of TorqueMasters.


While building this set of motors I had a few more good ideas for production. It will decrease the complexity of the motor, allow for complete compatibility between any style, reduce the amount of hardware, and reduce the machining quite a bit too. Bottom line, engineering for production to keep the final price low. I don't think we can do much better!


But in the mean time, I'll keep producing one-offs for people that want em "thumbsup"

When the next shipment of magnets comes in I will have enough parts for 50 pairs. I'm counting up all the parts this morning to see what I can build.

How would you say the torque is verse a 540 torquemaster?
 
I don't have a dyno for stall torque right now. I broke bearings on my XR with a set and never had an issue getting them bound down, so certainly enough for competitive driving.



Spent the morning going through a v5 design in CAD and seeing what kind of weight I could knock off with the simplified construction. Right now the V2 can as shown is 24 grams, can't knock off much more without having flexibility issues. The v5 can be varied from 29g to 20.19g depending on machining. The heavier version would have more torque and efficiency under load. The light version would have better clearance, we can get the diameter down to 30mm. In comparison a regular 540 can is about 45 grams without magnets.



I have four more pairs to make, and the fourth pair will have checkpoint brushes. Originally I thought that we could have a lighter motor with a brush tube design, but after reanalyzing there isn't any real savings.
 
After finishing up the new v5 design, the production style Puller 500 with lightweight parts should land right at 4.15 ounces with a full 540 armature. The heavyweight can and endbell will push the weight to 4.8 ounces.


I'm playing with some SL designs right now that could push the weight as low as 3.9 ounces with a regular armature, but they are not suitable for production because of the complicated design.
