My big fat JK build

decided to treat myself to a new truck after working my butt off over the last year.

between buying a house, having 2 crazy children. starting a new job and trying to start my own small business.. I have had zero time to sit back and enjoy the fruits of my labors (ya know..typical dad life)

with the new year starting. i decided to slice myself off a chunck of change to build myself a new truck and treat the wife to a trip to chicago for her and a friend to get away for a while (ie give myself some time to order a rediculous ammount of cool goodies for my build before she found out HOW much i was spending :flipoff: )

while i really wanted to go "balls deep" as i started adding everything i ever wanted to my truck my penny pinching got the best of me on a few parts (no currie axles..i play to hard and couldnt come to terms with tearing up such beautiful pieces of art) i wanted a great looking truck that was well built and stylish but competent on the trails and courses.

forgot to add a parts list for this build:

team knk stainless screw kit
VP shock mounts
VP panhard/3link mount
VP cms
VP transmission case
LockedUp RC slipper delete kit
Toyzuki motor mount
Gearhead droop kit
Pro-Line powerstroke shocks
RobinsonRacing trans. gears
MIP drive shafts
LockedUp RC fi spools
Axial HD bevel gears (38 front/43 rear)
Axial cvd
Axial chubs,knuckles,lockouts
LockedUp RC HD rear solid axle shafts
LockedUp RC 1.9 SLW beadlocks wheels/rings
VP clamping hex
HolmesHobbies esc w. 35t motor
Castle BEC
Spektrum dx4c
Axial jk body
Dinky RC radiator/light kit
Axial NVS light kit
br1 esc (light controller)
VP 6" rigid light bar
VP 5" rigid light bar
VP 4" light bar
MaddogRC 1" light bar w. 3racing winch mount
Rc4wd Warn winch
Rc4wd warn winch controller

i think thats everything...i think

probably goes without surprise my base for the build to start things off

first up for improvement was the driveline and transmission. chose to go with the rrp gears.

upon opening my parts tree from the kit i bumed to find a defect in one of the center outdrives gear mount holes and is only holding with 2 of the 3 bolts. so i will be switching to the hot racing solid outdrive when it arives next week.

up next was the axles **spoiler alert. who sees the panhard bar :p **

waiting for hot racing spools to get back in stock to finish out the internals but needed them together for my links

i chose to go with the diy route even tho the kit does come with the upgraded lowers, I wanted something more custom. these are are 3/16 steel with revo rod ends. the links will be powder coating black before build finish.

nice chassis!

ty much! going to be a great build..hopefully lol.

got some more work done tonight. going to order the proline spring tuning kit for the shocks and mess around with different shock mounting positions to get the ride height and desired suspension articulation.

gear head makes some very cool gear and this lift kit is no different. tons of adjustability. going to take some time with springs oils and mointing point to find the sweet spot.

Looks great so far!"thumbsup"

Im partial to the Iroks - they are so scale looking ans detailed.
But - what are those on the far right? you may need the height of that tire since your running the lift.
Im buidling a scale Rubi kit as well - I was running 2.2's but now switchinig to a 1.9 to get the correct look.
Im really digging those ProLine wheels - may just order me a set as well!

the ones far right are rc4wd compass 1.9s. im leaning towards the far left (rc4wd gladiators)

well just found these:

looks like im down to:
1.9 xl flat irons
1.9 rc4wd gladiators
1.9 swamper xl
1.9 iroks
1.9 growlers

tough choices

The 1.9 Iroks are nice tires, I find they grip alot and work excellent in snow and ice and pretty good on rocks and trails. you will find however, your terrain will dictate what tires work best...I bought a few sets over the course of a few months and now use the set that works for where I am going that day..

in no particular order are....

SS Iroks
G8 TSL XL's
G8 Flat Irons
R35 Ripsaws
HB White Dot Rovers

they will require break in time, a few packs run thru before they really shine...also, foams play an important role. I use Crawler Innovations double deuce foams and deuces wild foams...

I JUST ordered the ProLine Flat Iron XL'S.....cant wait till they get here!

I'm partial to the Compasses.Have them on both my trucks.I like the extra clearance you get from a taller tire.

I have 1.9 IROCs on a Twin Hammers. They work very very well. It was also my best rig in the snow we had in Dallas (yes, that is not a typo) a few days ago. I had 2.2 Swampers on my Yeti and it was a nightmare. They are large tires however, and stand tall at 4.75 inches. They are a little too big from my TH, but I like it that way.

woohoo! mail man hit me with a stack of new goodies for the truck today! update to follow later tonight. guess away. one is pretty obvious lol

Re: My big fat JK build

What's the lift kit for? How is that going to make this a better rig?

It won't, they just raise the COG. Unless you're using for shorter shocks, or using them mounted sideways for more mounting locations.

Even factory sits a tad high, and the drive line angles are steep when 100% stock, unless you've got longer upper links the lift kits will bind up the driveshafts with stock length shocks.

I have the 1.9 Iroks and they're great. I was going places guys with pit bulls couldn't go. Hook well any where and clean out nice. Just tall enough to have good axle clearance but not too tall to make flipping easy on side hills or have the sidewall folding under. The width keeps the folding down a little too. Stock foams work well too for a lighter rig.

one of the upgrades I will be doing to this truck requires me to run the body at the lowest position possible. I also plan on running a very large 1.9 tire. The larger tires and low set body will create complications when it comes time to run the truck. By using the lift kit and tuning it exactly to my needs I will be able to retain full suspension and steering articulation without having anybody rub. The pictures of the lift kit or just to show it installed and it will be tweaked later on after my tires, and shock tuning kit arrive
