Rock candy give a way crawler build thread

I would like to start by introducing myself. My name is Becky Barger and I am a proud member of RCC, RECON, and Rock Candy RCC. I would also Like to introduce Mindy Howe, founder of Rock Candy RCC, and Jessica Downing, website coordinator. Rock Candy RCC’s sole purpose is to promote the sport of remote control rock crawling for women. As an organization we have been promoting female drivers through our presence at local and national competitions, the Rock Candy RCC forum, and most importantly through our generous supporters. In an effort to keep our organization growing we have planned a unique fundraiser that will not only support the promotion of remote control rock crawling, but will also support breast cancer research. As a club we have decided to build a raffle crawler at the Axial West Coast Championships and then draw a name at Nationals to give the crawler away. It will be a unique opportunity for men and women alike to see women actively involved in the technical aspect of the hobby. It will give women who might have been intimidated by building a crawler the opportunity to see the process, ask questions and dispel some of their fears. It will also be a great opportunity to promote the products in the car as well as support an important charity.
.
When the girls of Rock Candy RCC came up with the idea of the give a way crawler, we decided that we wanted to raffle off a top notch, high end, true comp ready crawler that would be competitive once you tuned it to your liking. The decision was to build a V1 Berg with the best products on the market. With the help of some of the best vendors in RC Crawling we have put together an impressive list of parts that will be used to build the Rock Candy RCC Raffle Crawler. If you purchased all the items that have been donated to this build you will have spend over $2,000.00.
Rock Candy RCC is now selling tickets through Pay Pal. To order please PM me and/or email me at cruzinillusioncustoms@msn.com and I will give you directions on how to pay for the tickets. Please put ROCK CANDY RCC, your name, address, phone number and quantity in the comments section. The cost of the Give A Way Stickers will be:
$10 for 1 Sticker
$25 for 3 Stickers
$50 for 8 Stickers
$100 for 20 Stickers

50% of the funds raised will go to the growth of the Rock Candy RCC and the other 50% will be donated to Breast Cancer Research. The Crawler will be raffled off during the 2010 USRCCA Nationals held in Disney, Oklahoma on September 11th after competition has ended for the day.
Here is a list of the generous vendors that have given to the build and the items they have donated.

looking like this will be a great build...and for a great cause as well "thumbsup"

Rear Axle Build:

I decided that I would start the build by working on the rear axle. The parts that I will use during the rear axle build are:

JeepinDoug's WT rear lockouts
Kasper's Berg V1 rear Axle
RC Axle Master's 6MM Chromoly Straight Axle Conversion
Wheel Work's Adjustable Upper Link Mount

I started by tearing down the rear axle.

015_016.JPG

Using Axial's Metric Allen Set it made short work of the tear down.
016_019.JPG

Cow Performance Companies Large Work Mat kept everything organized and kept the screws from rolling off the table.
017_015.JPG

By the way the work mat goes to the winner of the raffle crawler"thumbsup"

I checked to see if we had the new style locker or the original style locker in the axle. We got lucky and it was the older style. If it was the newer style locker we would have had to modify the locker by cutting the slot longer so the axle shafts could fully engage in to the locker.

Next, I took the knuckles and cut the steering arm off to allow for clearance. If you leave the arm on the knuckle you risk the chance that your tire could catch on the arm and tear your sidewall open and or possible hang up on a rock while you are crawling.

Reflection from Wheel Works went out of his way to design an adjustable upper link mount for the Berg V1 axles. In the past, many of us, would have to machine or modify the original mounts to get the clearance we would need to clear the case on the rear axle or the steering on the front axle. With Wheel Works adjustable upper link mounts you have the ability to adjust the mount forward or aft to multiple locations. Wheel Works should have these available to the public soon.
028_004.JPG

During the install of the adjustable upper link mount and the reassembly of the rear axle, I used blue lock tite to assure that non of the fasteners would back out during everyday crawling and or competing.
030_006.JPG

The first part I installed was the lower portion of the link mount. As you can see there are three holes to allow you to adjust the lower portion forward or aft on the axle depending on how far forward or aft you want your upper piece too be.
031_005.JPG

I choose to install the lower block on the most forward location to allow for clearance of the upper links do to the plans of clocking the rear axle up to allow for addition clearance of the rear motor.
032_005.JPG

I then installed the upper portion of the adjustable link mount onto lower block. If you noticed there are two different sets of mounting hole on the upper portion of the link mount for even more adjustablility. You will also notice that you can install the upper links to the sides or to the top or bottom of the mount. Another great thing about the this mount is that all the holes are threaded so there is no need to try to locate really long hardware if you want to run your upper links parallel or outboard on your axle.

Thanks Wheel Works for new and innovative product!!!!!

MORE TO COME SOON!!!!!!!!

Looking good Becky! Looks like you could use some links soon!:mrgreen: PM sent"thumbsup"

That is going to be one impressive MOA. well done on the raffle, glad to see someone working for a cause. "thumbsup"

Now that I have all the hardware lock tited and the new adjustable upper link mount by Wheel Works installed, it is time to reassemble the rear axle.

Before I reassemble both halves of the gear case, I made sure I gave the gears a good greasing.

(I would install the motor and set the gear mesh at this time but the custom built CONTRA BAND motors by Rock Hard have not arrived yet. I will install the motor at a later time when I receive them.)

037_004.JPG

Now it is time to install RC Axle Masters 6MM chromoly rear straight axle conversion. I have been running these axle in my 2.2 Berg Comp Crawler for the last 9 months and have had zero issues. Nothing but the best from RC Axle Master. This kit can be used with any type of lockouts on the market.

Since I am using Jeeping Doug's WT lockouts I will need to place the C-clips that come with the kit on the inner most grove and middle groove. The clips will hold the inner bearing in place inside the axle tube and hold the brass bushing into the inner knuckle.

I have installed the 6MM x 10MM x 3MM bearing onto the axle shaft against the C-clip.

038_005.JPG

I then installed the brass bushing into the inboard side if the modified knuckle.

039_005.JPG

I then installed the 6MM x 11MM x 4MM bearing into the outer side of the modified knuckle.
040_005.JPG

I then installed the axle shaft with the bearing into the axle tube, making sure it is seated so the bearing is against the bearing retainer lip in the axle tube.
041_005.JPG

I then installed the hat bushings into the modified knuckle. Since the original knuckles were used on the rear axle the original hat bushings can be used.
042_003.JPG

I then installed JeepinDoug's WT Lockout over the axle shaft and into the axle tube. The quality and fit of the lockout is amazing. Only top knotch quality from JeepinDoug's products.
043_004.JPG

After the lockout was installed I then reinstalled the modified knuckle.
044_004.JPG

I repeated the process for the other side of the axle.
045_004.JPG

046_003.JPG

At this time I would normally modify the 12MM hexes to fit over the larger axle shafts, but I wanted to use Axial Hexes versus the stock hexes because they have a set screw, which helps retain the hex in place and reduces the chance of loosing the drive pins. I will need to pick up a set at my local hobby store tomorrow and will update the thread on how to modify the hexes. It will be the same modification for the front axle.

On to the Vanquish Products Incision MOA Chassis:

Vanquish was gracious enough the donate one of there MOA specific MOA Incision Chassis. The workmanship in their products is second to no one. You can see it here in the quality of the machine work in their chassis.
047_004.JPG

Here are a couple of shots of me assembling the chassis. (Thanks to my husband Tom;-))
049_002.JPG

050_002.JPG

The assembly was quit easy and didn't take long. The lower bolts are not tight do to R2J Kustoms is fabricating custom lower and upper links for this build. Thanks Shon!!!!!!!"thumbsup"
051_002.JPG

052_002.JPG

You can see the cutout on the lower skid for more clearance. The quality even shows in their delrin pieces.
054_001.JPG

The upper support pieces may be relocated when I install the electronics tray and the shock mounting locations.
055_002.JPG

This is the first of many Vanquish Products donated to the raffle crawler. Thanks Vanquish for your generosity!!!!!"thumbsup"

Looks really good Becky. Thank you."thumbsup"

One thing I have noticed after a little more testing with the proto mounts like I sent you. On the front axle.... With some steering kits and depending on where you end up clocking the motor itself, you might have to trim the bottom of the delrin block just a little. The final version won't need that once I make the final adjustments.

Becky great job! i'm also gonna be donating a set of GUNNAR pins for this build! i have been breaking the heck out of my drive pins and scott (gunnar) handed me a set of gunnar pins, and said try these man! hav'nt snapped one yet!

once again keep up the good work!

I'll donate a set of body mounts if you want them. I also have some pins to fit the Berg gears too.

I got home from work today and another package arrived. It was the DX3E from Krawler Konceptz. Krawler Konceptz was generous enough to donate the DX3E along with a set of custom designed skins. I have received the skins yet but have seen what Krawler Koncepts came up with. There is a lot of thought and meaning behind the design. The inspiration came from Milly( Krawler Konceptz mother in law) who had Breast Cancer and is a survivor!
She told Krawler Konceptz to make this skin have ATTITUDE....

002_021.JPG

Again the skins have not arrived but I had to us the picture Krawler Konceptz posted to show the thought that went into the design.

I will have the skins install as part of the build thread at a later date.
Thank you Krawler Konceptz for everything!!!!!

My husband, Cruzin Illusion, went to our local hobby store today to pick up some of the odds and ends that we will need for the build. I want to thank RPMJ (Rodney) for the donation of $75.00 to purchase the misc. items that would be needed to complete the build. RPMJ is not a vendor on RCC or any other site. Rodney is just an everyday member here. I want to thank Rodney for the donation from his heart to help this great cause.

Please contact me via PM and/or email cruzinillusioncustoms@msn.com and I will provide you instructions on how you can pay for your tickets. Sorry for the inconvenience we are working on a solution.

for those of you who haven't heard ,someone complained to pay pal about our raffle from pirate 4x4 and rccrawler, so we had to stop accepting payments using pay pal for now, apparently raffles are considered gambling.but don't worry guys I am currently working on a solution to the ticket sales. One way or another we will get it done!this is to great of a cause to quit! Please be patient with us as we remedy this problem, your support so far has been AWESOME! To this person who flagged us, KARMA!!!! you can still pm holy roller for directions on purchasing tickets until I get this solved.
