At the risk of being the odd man out here, It's important to mention that this propaganda cuts both ways. I'm a socialist, as in literal card carrying member of the DSA. I also live a life that contains mostly conservative coded aspects: I'm in the trades, and spend my free time woodworking, playing with tiny trucks, playing with full sized sports cars, listening to very loud and aggressive music, skateboarding, and so on. I'm also someone who takes every opportunity to study politics, both sides, main stream, and alt media, anything I can consume to deepen my understanding of the system in which we all live.
Without getting too into the weeds, this nonsense that keeps happening at an accelerating rate is largely fueled by that propaganda. Though I mentioned that it cuts both ways, it originates from from a common place. Call it the rich, call it those in power, call it the establishment. The point is, it doesn't originate with us. I take every opportunity to talk politics, and one thing that I've noticed is that I have more rewarding conversations with conservatives, libertarians, and other socialists than I do with liberals. Not to cast out liberal individuals from the conversation, but there's a certain mindset that understands the detriment of extreme power imbalance in our society. Point being, it's not your neighbor that holds that power over your head. Instead, it's a concentrated number of people who would like you to believe that it is, and so will direct you to your neighbor so you don't turn your focus their direction.
Greatscott, I'm really sorry that you and your community have to deal with this tragedy.
Timmahh, I'm always happy to talk politics, especially regarding how real world socialists (not the propagandized version) actually think and act.
Deerhurst, I never throw friends and family away, and would value the opportunity to discuss the roots of evil with a new friend.
HVACTeacher, I think you're spot on about the diminishing of opportunities, increase in desperation, and trauma. Also, maybe you have a place to crash if I need to flee the country, haha???
Best simple piece of advice that I try to internalize is a quote by one of my favorite contemporary political minds, Michael Brooks - "Be ruthless with systems, be kind to people".
