What happened to handshake agreements?

Don't feel bad. I have lost close to $9,000 due to folks not manning up to what they agreed on.

This is the best option.

Since you didn't get him to sign anything or agree to any other terms, it really is your only option if you want to move forward.

Anytime I sell something to someone who wants to make a deposit on it, I put it in writing that the deposit is non-refundable and that the buyer has X amount of time to settle the deal, after which if it has not been settled, I keep the money and put the item back up for sale. If the person won't agree and sign the paper, then they can keep on truckin'.

Yes....freakin stoopid lazy people these days. Good luck to the OP.

As a person who loves his family and will do anything to protect his family, i will protect them PERIOD. The police told me that it is not within the law to do so unless they are in my home threatening me. They have shown that they want to push me around and try to mess with the property already and that shows intent to me. Unfortunately the law protects the criminal not the homeowner in West Virginia.

x2

You are POSITIVE his mom's house is 1 mile away? Or is that only what he told you? Do you know exactly where?

Have you ever seen the people that came to your house before?
Myself... I live in the country and know every face within at least 2 miles of me.

Either way....POLICE ... Call them now. Who cares what they told you in the past. This is the present. It will most likely not be tonight, but within a short time you WILL be ripped off.

I can't help but saying... Even if they are in the process of setting you up for a theft..... Your story is not making complete sense..... Almost like there is a key piece/event that you are leaving out.

I am seriously wondering why you did not simply hand the $500 back to the parents when they arrived instead of handing over a set of ATV tires???

Police... Call them now. No... They can not do much AFTER they rip you off. But they can go put the fear of God in them right now and patrol your neighborhood.

Cardinal Rule #1 selling things in person

NEVER at your home. Load your stuff up and take it to the buyer's location or meet somewhere in the middle.....ALWAYS

Yes, and good luck getting the police to actually do the work that they are paid for! Our police and CHP are quick to all show up at a bank robbery, donut shop, quittin time, murder, traffic ticket, but God forbid they should have to come out talk with neighbors and be proactive!:evil::evil:

Police statistics say 3 days. Call the cops, let the know they shoved you around in your workshop, tried to get in your car while your back was turned, and ASK THE COPS TO COLLECT THE FINGERPRINTS!! If it's a scam, the cops need to be made aware of it now. If the cops won't, hell, you can even collect the fingerprints. Get some really good scotch tape, put it over the fingerprints and pressing it good. Then, put more scotch tape on the backside to protect the prints. At least you have their true identity.

Ask the cops to patrol your neighboorhood at night, and most importantly, during the day. Most robberies occur during the day while folks are at work, or out of the home.

Ever seen the a show called Swamp People....that have a famous saying "Choot'em".

Love that show and their saying! :)

My 1:1 stuff I do. Ya folks being all "good friend" and then bailing....

My Dad used to own an A/C repair business when I was a kid. He had a job for a massive install (new construction). He installed $35K worth of equipment (not including labor). Shortly after that, the owner filed for bankruptcy. He was low man on the totem pole and the bank who owned the loan took the money back and he wasnt allowed to get his equipment out.

They have since changed that law....

I had a busy sell his bike out of his garage. Well try to. Guy came to look at it. Wanted to test ride it. My buddy agreed as long as he could get a insurance and licence copy before hand.

Guy rides bike and informed my buddy. I'll think about it. The next day the bike is stolen. The neighbor saw the car and the man get out of the passenger seat. Knowing it was the same people and that his neighbor wasnt home he called the police. About 4 hours later they show up. Bike is gone.

My buddy turns over the mans licence and insurance info. After being talked out of a personal visit. Lucky for him the bike was recovered. Wrecked but recovered.

good luck catching them. my ? is did you check to make sure the $ was real?

Yeah, cash was legit. Went to the bank with him to withdraw it. The teller handed him the money and he handed it to me. Kept my eyes on it so he didn't have time for a switch.

It's been pretty quiet since the other night. The neighbor's kid hasn't been back home and his parents are gone too. Nothing has been on the security cameras either. I hope this is a sign that they have given up and not a sign that they are just taking time to come up with another scheme. I got another camera that faces all of the workshops and the driveway and we have an alarm that lets us know if anything comes on the property now too. So far that has been a blessing as its pretty loud and sensitive.
