| Hacked and Abused YJ
I finally got a new camera and the weather was nice and my son is in school so it seemed perfect to take a few shots of my YJ. This is by no means a build thread. I am bad with progress pictures so i will just post what i have and try to explain the process of the build. But most likely i will post pictures and half ass answer questions. Anyways i purchased this body off of ebay a few years ago at a steal of a price. Always liked the YJ builds on here but wanted to do something a little different. I have access to a machine shop and run a cnc mill. I will leave it at that. First I wanted pretty much full droop setup. I got this thing as low as i could. I like having the link bars almost horizontal. Here it is at ride height. Still has a good amount of travel. Not much on flex shots since they are never realistic. Still flexes pretty good. Want to add a sway bar for the rear. The axle housings were all made by me. Axial axles are perfect in every design except scale looks. I wanted the Spydertrax 9" housing look. The center section is 1/10 scale. The axle tubes are a little bigger than 1/10 but due to tooling and bearing sizes, it is what it is The front uses Axial hi clearance knuckles. The rest is custom. I am a machinist not a welder so be easy on me. If anyone has tried to have 3 link on these Axial frame rails and trying to keep full droop with these Tamiya Jeep bodies, you know the pain i went through. Also wanted front driver offset axle. The sliders are a bit rusty from driving in water and mud. I am planning to paint the bumpers, sliders and tire carrier black when i get off my lazy butt. Anyways here are a few more from cruising around my property today. Thanks for looking. Any questions feel free to ask. This rig is far from finished. Would like to complete interior and toying with painting the wheels black. Too much shiny. Any input would be appreciated. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Nice! Great job in the axle housing. What's the wheel base length?

Nice custom axles and they look awesome. Second, the 1.9, 4.19" MTZ's are one of my favorite tires and they look perfect with those wheels and that jeep body. Drrop setups on 3link/panhard are always a challenge.

What did you use for the ring and pinions for the axles?

Awesome build! The axles definitely have that Spidertrax look. I think black wheels would look great on it. . |

Thanks!! Quote:
The 4.19" MTZ's scale appeal is off the charts. They perform amazing as well except in thick mud . Quote:
Yeah, if I can recall they give over a 1/4" more clearance. Quote:

I gotta say the axles are freaking amazing. One question is how do the gears in them hold up to crawling and getting stuck or bound up? I know the 1:16th scales do well to running fast and bashing but not sure how they would do slow and getting stuck. Awesome build though.

No lie when I first seen this thread I thought it was about a 1:1 rig, I didn't look at the location of the thread, so as I'm looking at the pics I'm thinking in my head holy shit this thing is amazing lol but as I got further down the thread I seen 1/10 scale and I start to rethink and actually look at the pics and sure enough it's scale lol... Great job my friend you def had me fooled with the pics lol Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Very nicely done. The custom axles are awesome. I see they look to be rusting some on the bottom. You made them out of steel? That must really help with the COG. Packaging links, steering, and drive shafts can be a pain to package on a low COG YJ of any scale. I went through it on my 1:1, well I'm still going through it trying to get a bit more up travel. |

Well I decided to throw some paint on this turd. Also the front bumper/remote winch set up got ditched for something a little more realistic looking. It kills my approach angle but I can live with it. Its just a toy any way. Whipped up this bumper on the mill and threw some flat black on it. Painted the back bumper and tire carrier. And now you can see how the body is located and held in place in the back. Don't mind the spare. I just wanted to see how it would look with a full size spare mounted up. I need to order another MTZ. Sliders got some paint since they were rusting away. Painted the wheels too. Not too crazy about the color but i wasn't feeling the raw aluminum either. I may make a different set in the future. I am going to clean up some holes in the body and patch it up some then going to repaint it in olive green. Oh, and the wheelbase is 10 5/8" for those wondering. Seems very stable for being top heavy and having a short wheelbase. A lot of unsprung weight keeps it happy. Any thoughts or suggestions are welcomed. Thanks again for looking! Love the new front bumper. Looks exactly like the one I built for my 1:1. I am building a 1/10 YJ now with an all steel body. You'll have to check it out. It will also be OD green as are all of my Jeeps, big or small.
