This is for 2 reasons
1. The narrower tire puts more psi to the ground with it's narrower foot print.
2. By removing the large center lug I have less wheel hop with my light weight rig.

A good example of this is my good friends berg which is heavier crawls exceptionally on stock Sedona's(shaved side walls) with no wheel hop in 4wd no dig no burns being used. I'm just guessing at the weight but I'd say his rig is around 5lbs or just over.

As if you were to put the same tire on my rig I would get some wheel hop which I personally don't care for.

Also keep in mind I have a hybrid axle I've built so you can't really compare a stock axles width to what I'm currently running, but maybe this info will help. Before narrowing the tires I was just under 10 3/4 inches. So total width of removing the whole center lug was around 3/8 of an inch.

Hope this helps.
