| 27t motor overheating...need advice
Was out playing in the dirt/doing some mild crawling when i noticed my scx10 losing power, and actually "stalled" on the face of a small rock. I am running 2s lipo with an alarm so I pulled the body to check voltage. Still had 4.0 in each cell...but my stock ESC was pretty warn, and my motor was burning hot. I got this truck gently used so Im assuming the gearing is stock. I have 1.9 flat irons on it with some weight in them, but other than that its stock. Im in the market for a motor/esc upgrade anyways. What do you guys recommend? I do 70% trails and 30% crawling and will be running 1.9 pitbulls for tires. Hoping to get something ordered tomorrow as I just joined a group of local crawlers and have a GTG sunday. |

It sounds like you need to gear down. My Og scx10 had 14/87 gearing and the motor never got even warm. I am currently running 16/80 and I am warm but not hot. You need to find out what gearing you have and go smaller on your pinion or larger on spur, or both, to gear down.

Perhaps your gear mesh is set too tight? Just a thought |

Motor might be "tired". It is a $10-15 motor. I usually get about 40 packs of 2S 5000mah through the Axial motors before I dump another in(my honcho uses stock electronics). I run 14/87 Sent from a whiskey downer beer pounder's shop |

Need to regear, i put 14/87 in my daughters wraith about 4 years ago and it's still running the stock 27t motor. Last year i added a BEC and now she runs 3s and it still running like a champ.

I agree, new motor, then gear down while you're in there. I'm running an old Monster Maxx 21t 550 motor in mine with a 9.6v pack geared with a 90t spur and a pinion anywhere from 12t-14t (can't remember which at the moment.)

I run a 35t Holmes hobbies sport, really good motor, rebuild able, not bad price wise ($50ish). I also like the itegy lathe motor great for its price( $25ish) The 35t will give you slightly less speed than you have now, buy slightly more run time.

I'm running a $14 12volt dewalt motor on 3s in my 10lb bronco. Not sure on the gearing I'm running but these motors have plenty of torque and wheel speed and last a long time. Its not rebuild able but at $14 who cares.

I like the $20 Traxxas Titan 21t from the brushed E-Maxx and E-Revo for these trucks too. Being 550 motors, they make good torque in the smaller, lighter rigs like these, plus will still take upwards of 16.8v if you can and then want to run 3s-4s through them. Once the Trinity Monster Maxx 21t currently in mine finally gives up, I'll throw another Titan 21t back in it.

Get yourself a HH or a brood, take real good care of them and they'll last a good while. A quality motor is money well spent. Be sure to let us know what you get |

HH 35t on 3s with a CC BEC. could check out a HH combo also as some of their esc's have BEC's built in, will get you more wheel speed and torque than a 27t on 2S. Stock gearing is 20/87, try 16-18/87 with the 3S 35t, makes a difference! Going brushless will require upgraded trans gears, dif gears, drive shafts output shafts axle shafts, and probably a higher torque servo as well. Going brushless is not as simple as dump it in and run. My $0.02 Last edited by Dad,Canyoufix?; 06-04-2014 at 07:59 AM. |
