| To answer that question, a shaft that is 5mm all the way would go into a stock housing no problem. It baffles me that companies are necking down such an important part for strength and wasting time machining. If you left it alone, all that's needed are flats and threads, and the hole for the hex pin. I could or any one else with simple tools could make them a set of rear 5mm shafts. Just cut to length, run a die over one end for threads. Grind the flats and drill the hole. It's obviously best to have everything machined. Clear Eyes, Full Hearts, Can't Lose |

5mm drill rod is pretty easy to find in the C58-C65 Rockwell rating. I would assume the only thing that would need to be done is shorten the screws on the axle lockout since I'm pretty sure they hit the axle. I know I had to shorten the ones on the front axle when I went from dog bones to universals.

I'm going to try the A2 out. Should be just fine. If not, I'll go with titanium. I'm 99% sure it will. I think the only part that hits on the originals is the little flange right before the flats. Everywhere a bearing rides is 5 mm. I will check in the morning and report back. Clear Eyes, Full Hearts, Can't Lose |

5mm will not pass through the screws for the link mounts. It would take a small slot sanded in place where they pass. I will mic it and see how small it needs to be. Clear Eyes, Full Hearts, Can't Lose |

Looks like only .025 will have to come off the OD of the shaft where the screw pass through. No biggie. This is to run a true 5mm shaft in a stock Wraith housing. Clear Eyes, Full Hearts, Can't Lose |

So Carterfab, are you turning down axles to 5mm or starting with 5mm? How are you retaining the axle in the housing?

I think there is some confusion brewing. I'm making the shafts for these axles from 5mm. No neck downs. I also said that it can be done for the stock wraith axles with very little material removal for the link screws to pass through. In my wraith axles I run no slop clamping lockers from Highland Crawler. I have not made any for the Wraith axle and haven't seen a need yet. If I break one I will. These axles, Ultimate 9, have a double bearing carrier on the hub end and use an eclip to keep axle in place. You can always do the same with the axial setup. I use 5mm tight tolerance stock. I still want to give this a go. I do the 1:1 thing and like most others, I try to make the cheaper, easy to get to parts, the weak link. If I can beef up everything and leave one cheap part as that weak link, it would work out well in the long run. Axles are not a part I want to break so if I can eliminate that possibility, I'll do my best to do it. Besides, my best friend owns a machine shop | |

Finally got the bearing caps back from paint. Purple but pic does no justice. The front axle is almost complete, just have a couple holes to drill and tap for the c's. And install link brackets. So ready to get these done and slung under something. Cough cough, Shawn. Haha |
