Default Loud noise forward and Quiet in reverse

The drivetrain is really loud going forward. Almost like grinding but not really. Going in reverse is almost silky smooth.

I got this Wraith in a trade so I am not sure how the maintenance was done.

Should I pop off the diff covers and pack some grease in there?

So turns out it was my spur gear. The pinion gear looks directional, if that makes sense.

You can see the teeth looks more like a saw blade.

Then the spur gear is damaged pretty good. Explains the quiet reverse.

Read the begginer's guide post and know that I need to step upto a 32p spur. Anyone have $0.02 to give on spur gear and pinion?

What exactly are you asking?
Brands of suitable spurs?
Gear ratios?

If you check Harley's guide, it has a few suggestions.

By the way, that pinion is not directional, just completely tore up, needed replacing a long time ago

I'm sticking to stock gearing, just brands I guess is what I am after. I just ran across Robinson Racing Slipper Unit 80T Steel Spur Gear: Wraith RRP1545. It being steel, I wouldn't need to do a 32p spur right?

I Would swap to 32p gears. They hold up better.

I'm betting the guy you bought it from used a metal spur and that's what chewed up the pinion. A nylon/plastic spur wouldn't do that sort of damage. That truck has been run hard. It appears you also may need a new slipper pad.

You should check the axle shafts and lockers, too. Maybe the tranny gears as well.

I did a tear down last night and with the motor out, the drivetrain spun freely and no noise. I will crack open the diffs to make sure. Ordering up a 2spd tranny from rc4wd later this week

A 56T from Duratrax:

And 14T from Robinson Racing:
TowerHobbies.com | RRP0140 0140 Robinson Racing Pinion Gear 32P 14T

will put you back at your stock gearing.

Found the Robinson Racing metal slipper spur and pinion. Being metal, I stuck with the 80/20.

Is that a steel pinion??? I've seen a few Tamiya alloy ones like this but that's a first on a steel if it's only been used with the stock spurs.

I think Solitaire had it correct. Used a metal spur and ran it hard.
