This just means that you need to buy a second set of 7075 housings. :ror:

My fix would be much faster. JB weld! and a file to shape it would be my fix as I don't have the equipment to do that kind of work.

Mo' Nasty 7075 Axles!

I spent many hours this weekend working on a full axle rebuild. Hope to finish it up this week.

Let's start with what the old VP axles had become. I gotta give them props because they have served me well.

Just a little material missing on the front diff.

http://i1229.photobucket.com/albums/.../IMG_19041.jpg

Oh yeah.

http://i1229.photobucket.com/albums/.../IMG_19051.jpg

New, rear, front.

http://i1229.photobucket.com/albums/.../IMG_19081.jpg

Front.

http://i1229.photobucket.com/albums/.../IMG_19251.jpg

Blasted rear.

http://i1229.photobucket.com/albums/.../IMG_19261.jpg

Both.

http://i1229.photobucket.com/albums/.../IMG_19271.jpg

They will make nice art until they make nice parts.

On to some fun with my less than true set of SLW's. Warning, images may be disturbing.

Coping saw.

http://i1229.photobucket.com/albums/.../IMG_19161.jpg

Bzzzzzzzzzzzing!

http://i1229.photobucket.com/albums/.../IMG_19121.jpg

Hogged out.

http://i1229.photobucket.com/albums/.../IMG_19131.jpg

After several years my old 7075 comp wheel discs have a new home! And I know I won't bend them.

http://i1229.photobucket.com/albums/.../IMG_19141.jpg

Old Ironsides vs SLW

http://i1229.photobucket.com/albums/.../IMG_19151.jpg

Road Warriors!

http://i1229.photobucket.com/albums/.../IMG_19171.jpg

No I'm not running them like that.

Rear axles getting the 4 bolt lockout treatment from the get-go.

http://i1229.photobucket.com/albums/.../IMG_19191.jpg

Tap that ass.

http://i1229.photobucket.com/albums/.../IMG_19211.jpg

And now the fronts. No 4-bolt chubs due to Hysol from the get-go as well.

http://i1229.photobucket.com/albums/.../IMG_19181.jpg

I'm trying some flush mount motor screw on the bell bellies to slow wear. Once the leading edge wears off they should not be an issue.

http://i1229.photobucket.com/albums/.../IMG_19231.jpg

Front three-link mount looks much more at home now.

http://i1229.photobucket.com/albums/.../IMG_19241.jpg

And now to prevent my driving from trashing the front axle in short order. Enter a plate of 0.125" shittyshittyone and some 50 grit.

http://i1229.photobucket.com/albums/.../IMG_19281.jpg

Hysol y'all.

http://i1229.photobucket.com/albums/.../IMG_19291.jpg

Minor stress cracks due to bending.

http://i1229.photobucket.com/albums/.../IMG_19301.jpg

http://i1229.photobucket.com/albums/.../IMG_19311.jpg

Serious road warriors. With time the edges will buff out and will be much lower profile. The edges of the plate will be pounded around the diff cover. Tonight I'll drill and tap several M2.5 screws from the inside of the diff cover to anchor the skid better. Might even tidy up the Hysol bead.

http://i1229.photobucket.com/albums/.../IMG_19321.jpg

More later.

Nice spinny tools to make cool parts there.

I really like my AL VP wraith housings but it's a shame the C's have to be permantley mounted. Not a huge deal but is necessary. Mine have been epoxied on for almost a year now. Not sure what this "Hysol" is you speak of but i'll google it, as the kids say.

Thanks man.

The only downside of permanent chubs (which is the only way to go I agreee) is the inability to switch axles front to rear when the front case is trashed...or you can go to 4WS.

I just couldn't leave well enough alone. I added 3x2.5M screws to my front diff skid. That should provide some shear force resistance.

Screws are positioned as such in order to avoid contact with the pinion.

Panhard link update tonight and then on to some cosmetic stuff.

Loctite epoxy or JB weld will do the trick. Clean all parts very well with motor spray or 70% ethanol (drug store medical stuff). Make sure not to get any in the bearing seats. You'll never have a loose chub ever again.

I have not tested the clamp style chubs. My guess is VP solved the problem via a new design. I'd epoxy the new ones too as insurance.

Hope this helps gents.

I'd epoxy any parts together that never needed to come apart again. Downside is that if one of the stuck parts fail, all of the stuck parts fail. I've not epoxied plastic so you're on your own there.

Update. Took two attempts but I bent a new panhard link. The improvements vs previous was to have to have no pumpking bumping at full compression, no rubbing the RH lower grill mount screw and a perfectly parallel line vs the grill at full compression (last part is irrelevant when I increase upward travel a touch.

http://i1229.photobucket.com/albums/.../IMG_19491.jpg

Time to dump the front lower links and make some trailing [leading] arms. Longer front shocks and new front shock mounts on tap. Gotta loosen up the front. It's too stiff.

J

SkaldidDog 09-29-2014 08:13 AM

Three Link with Leading Arms

Man it felt good to drive after weeks of work. Now the motor and trans need to come out. Some one is not happy. Regardless. It worked a lot better with the updates.

I cranked out some 7075 "leading" arms for the front end.

http://i1229.photobucket.com/albums/.../IMG_19591.jpg

Looks as good as it drives.

http://i1229.photobucket.com/albums/.../IMG_19601.jpg

I used the existing shocks and that obviously gave me much more travel. The vertical vs laid back shocks work a lot better ie more linear and smooth response. I placed and insert in the previous axle shock mount point to strengthen the mount. Also lengthened the upper link to rock the pumpkin forward a bit. It was too laid back under load. Now it rides flat.

http://i1229.photobucket.com/albums/.../IMG_19611.jpg

It'll never look this clean again.

http://i1229.photobucket.com/albums/.../IMG_19621.jpg

Full droop.

http://i1229.photobucket.com/albums/.../IMG_19631.jpg

Full compression. 34mm_1 3/8" travel. Virtually zero bump steer

http://i1229.photobucket.com/albums/.../IMG_19641.jpg

Given the long travel and lack of bump steer I may not put the longer shocks on the front. Time will tell. I may get bored. Regardless, rebuilding all 4 helped a lot. Pics above are with 725 hubs. It was too wide. After a ~4 mile trail run I switched to 600 hubs (original width). That's where it will stay. Front diff skid did not fall off."thumbsup" Oh, the M4 button caps speed bumps on the rear trailing arms had the crap beat out of them. They must be working.

More later.

Re-Power

Since it's gonna be ~100F out here for the next four days I figured I'd refresh the drive train and work on the body.

New guts should solved the glitchy non-sensored episodes. I'm interested to see the inside of the old motor. I'll rebuild it and keep it on standby.

Time to hide from the heat.

Joel...were/are you still running the sensor cable that comes with the Mamba Max? If so...that's one component I had issues with in my Wraith when I had it. Although it's a flexible harness...it's really not that flexible. I found a different one on Amain that was branded as a "Super Soft" version. They offer them in 50-200mm lengths so that's a nice feature as well. I believe the problem with mine was where the connection was made at the ESC or motor had a sharp bend in it and the vibrations/abuse it saw had weakened the connections.

I am running the Tekin wire. Thanks for the suggestion on the above wire. I seat the wire ends completely and put goop "tabs" on each of the short sides of the connector to hold it in place. I agree that the connections are likely the problem but they look and feel fine. Deep inspection will tell.

Thanks for leaving a tip EP. I need a damn burger.

Finished the body. Rig is done for now minus the velcro latch to hold the hood down. Since the panels/hood are low grade alloy I reinforced the hood with CF plate. Otherwise I'd cave it in in the first hour of play.
