Default ESC and Motor Combo..Birthday Ideas

Hey guys, So far you all have been A LOT of help .

I just finished moving my battery up front and relocating all the electronics.
So now my wife asks me what I would like for my Birthday.
I am thinking ESC and Motor combo.

Here is the all important question...Brushed or Brushless?
I am looking for Torque and some speed, Stock speed is pretty good as I really want to keep it as a Crawler. Can a good system be had for $150 or less?

So lets hear what you recommend..

For $150 you can get a castle sv3 and good quality brusshed motor from Holmes Hobbies!

For $250 you can get a mamba max pro and pro4 brushless motor and never want to run anything else.

Personally I like brushless simply because I dont have to have worry about the rebuild maintenance tthat comes with a brushed motor.

Traxxas ET-3S (MMP OEM'd) for around $70 and a Tekin Roc 412 3100kv for $140. I haven't run this combo yet, but I'm eager to get it going on 3s. Should be any day now.

So educate me a bit...

3100KV-3300KV The higher the KV= More power right ??
Faster and More Torque ??

lower kv is more torgue. higher kv is faster

i run a 2100kv 1/8 scale motor with gobs of torgue, but needs 5-6 lipos to see its full speed and torguepotential. but does well on 3s crawling and is very fun on 4s bashing

higher kv usualy means less power

Ok so I have 2s Venom Lipos 7.4V.
So would a Castle SV3 and a Tekin ROC 412 3100 KV be a good combo for me?

Mamba Max Pro and a Tekin Pro4 3300kv for brushless. As per Tekins site the Roc 412 3100 is only as fast as a 35t on 3s. For a brushed motor Mamba Max Pro or Holmes BR-XL and a hand wound Holmes motor.

I would like to get a Tekin Brushless, The ROC 412 has a couple of different KV listed..

ROC412 1200KV
ROC412 1800KV
ROC412 2300KV
ROC412 3100KV

I suppose the 1200KV will have tons of torque and low speed, and the 3100 will have good torque with good speed? Am I correct in this assumption?

the roc412 is a sensored brushless. the sv3 is not setup to run a sensored motor properly. it will work, but your low speed control will not be good. sensorless brushless setups do not work well for crawling type applications. sensored brushless works well. very good low speed control. the sv3 coupled with a brushed motor would work okay.

I think I would be looking at a Tekin RS Pro to run the ROC 412.

On Tekin's site they list the speed of the Roc 412 3100kv being about the same as a 35t brushed on 3s. So if you want speed along with torque then I'd go with the Pro4 3300kv. I just went through making that decision myself. I got the Pro4 3300kv and couldn't be happier.

According to the Tekin guys the Roc 412 is very similar to the Pro4 in terms of power and what not. It's still 4 pole and has a few tweaks for the way our trucks need the power.

For KV rating, it's the RPM that a motor will turn for each volt applied.

Let's look at a simple example:
3000kv motor
7v sent to motor

3000 * 7 = 21,000 rpm

Not all motors are built equally and you can have similar motors that are the same KV rating, but perform hugely different. I installed the 412 into my Wraith last night and it did need a little trimming on the spur cover. I have it geared 12/58 right now and plan to run 2s and 3s (but mostly 3s) I expect it to be a bit faster than the 35t motor I had planned to run.

Any pics of the motor and esc installed??
