Default King Shock Tuning?

(Don't know why there isn't a suspension specific forum here???)

So I guess I'm a sucker for things that look cool, I just got a set of the RC4WD King shocks (110mm) for my wraith, these things are super soft, which isn't all bad but what I find to be a problem is that they have absolutely no damping at all and are very springy. Now I use my rig for 99% crawling so you would think it would be fine but with them so soft and no damping torque twist is extreme, articulation is excellent!

The other thing I find annoying is they top out really hard, even just picking the rig up you hear and feel a solid "thunk" when they top out.

For those of you with the King's what have you done to improve them? I would like a nice balance of crawling performance and trail performance.

Thanks!

You could try there spring assortment to tune them:
110mm King Scale Shock Spring Assortment
These are really your best option for a stiffer suspension or you could use a heavier oil. What weight oil do you have in them right now? I'd suggest starting with maybe 30-40 weight but heavier the oil the slower the damping.
I have 110mm kings on my scx10 honcho and I have 15 wt oil with stock springs but for your wraith that isn't the best option as it will bottom out even faster..

I think I got these working really good, I made some changes that gave them effective damping and you can really feel the difference between 30 and 45wt oil with the stock springs so there's some good adjust ability there. I dont have time to post up more info tonight but I'll try to get some pics up tomorrow.

I shot video of the procedure tonight, I'll try to get it edited and up tomorrow night. I will say this, the rig handles 100x better, It will be the weekend before I can really put them on the real rocks but I believe there going to work much better on the rocks since theres actually some resistance to help grip, guess I'll find out.

glad to hear it worked for ya but just a bit too much bs to do on a semi expensive shock set.sacrificing other shafts and trying to find those perfect friction o rings and shims to make the valving work.I would spend the money on powerstrokes or a few extra and get kyosho velvets in favour and not have the hassle...hope they last for your rig nice work.

I hear you, there are definitely better shocks out there, lots of them, but most people buy these because they look really good and IMO one of the most true to scale looking shock for a tube frame crawler there is, this is just about making them at lease usable if you want the look.

I'll know more once I get them on the rocks this weekend and I truely think the will work a lot better than the kit shocks.

Hi guys just to let you know Ive been running King shocks on 2 rigs & wont use anything else 1 wraith with SCT shocks, 1 SCX10 with resevor shocks. you need to play with the oil thats the trick they like heavy oil im at 50w on wraith & still working on SCX10 but resevor shocks look cool but are to small for wraith if you want performance. Good luck & have fun.

oldmanjeep , when you said resevor shocks look cool but are to small for wraith if you want performance. Are you talking about 100mm or the 110s?

Now I have 1k diff oil in all 4 , drained out the 100wt.
Very plush with the 1k diff oil, just using the bump stops off the stock shocks, and green slime on the o rings. I almost gave up on these, and was gonna go with some different shocks, but now wow I will be installing a droop kit when it arrive this week.
This is just my opinion.

Sorry for confusion. Dia. is what I was going for & related to brushless (speed) & controll. The smaller Dia. have worked very well on my SCX10 brushed setup with 40wt but it also has to do with the weight of your rig. It won't happin overnight keep working on springs also as with any shock you use. There is no 1 that works for all just like any upgrade for performance you need to tweek & tweek some more. But most of all HAVE FUN.

I have 5k diff oil in these shocks now, they are plush, but they do leak pretty bad. Gonna go with something different :( at the end of the month when I have some extra cash. Alittle bumbed..
