Default melting the yeti

Its still a completely stock yeti other then new hubs and has overheated since I got it. I'm running on 3s and I have checked the front end, trans, and rear end for binding. I've updated the firmware on esc. I don't know what else can cause overheating if nobody else is having else this problem on 3s with stock gearing. Both esc and motor are getting too hot to touch within 5-8 minutes of running and the truck starts to lag when accelerating. Then it'll go into thermal after about 10 min. I'd like to keep the same gearing if I can. Any suggestions?
Thanks

Check pinion/spur mesh, maybe too tight?

What are you doing with it? Bashing, crawling? I found the stock pinion a little too tall for my liking and dropped down to a 14t.

Ive checked gear mesh to many times to count, ive backed it off till it's almost sloppy and still gets hot. I'm bashing it mostly. I got a 14t pinion I'm going to drop in it if I can't figure it out. Makes no since though why nobody else has had this problem.

Sounds like something is in a bind be it a bearing, axle, etc.

I'm sure they are just not paying attention. Then when the motor dies they will start a thread that the motor sucks. 14t and your golden.

The one time I got to run mine before hubs went out mine shut off from heat. But after my hubs got bad I drove it slower and tried crawling with it some, so I can not say for sure if mine will do it if I was to run it like everything was normal.

I'm going to throw the 14t pinion in it tonight and hook up the esc and see if theres something I've missed when updating the firmware and see if that'll drop the temps

Make sure you don't have any timing turned on. Most 4 poles don't like that.

We've had a heat spell here it's been around 95 degrees and I've thermaled twice and that's only on 2 cell... Believe me you're not alone either. What I've found is that it all depends on the temp outside and running conditions.

It has been pretty warm here to low 90s so that may have something to do with it. I double checked esc and found firmware didnt update for some reason I updated it and set timing to 0 it's default is 15° like stated above I'll run it tomorrow now Its cooling down and see how it does

Mine was doing the same thing I put in a diffrent 1/8 esc doesnt even get to 95 and motor never above 120 the esc I think some of them are bad castle didn't even soider the wires to the connections its a very cheap setup just upgrade to a better esc.

I think I melted mine today too, lol. Bone stock running a 5000mah 3s. Hit thermal after about 10 minutes of bashing and climbing hills FOFF style. Checked the motor temp and it was at 140, but ESC was at 170. Let it cool down and it would run but then after a few minutes shut down again. I kept running it hard when it would run and think I damaged it pretty good. It will accelerate hard out of the hole and then just surge and sputter....just like a Lipo dump. I changed batteries and same result.

Moral of the story is this ESC will crap out when overheated and abused. Would benefit from a fan I am sure but just not up to the task for long term I wouldn't think.

It's basically the WP SideWinder 3. I not a big fanboy of that ESC and this is the same thing with the Axial badge.

I've been anti castle for years, but to keep the esc from killing itself you need to drop down on the pinion. I finally settled on an 11t (weighted gearheads with pit bulls were too much on the electrics)

Not to fully derail the thread, but why weighted wheels? With the stock electronics you will never pull crazy lines, and since this is essentially a go fast, you want as little rotating mass as possible, but thats just me.

Back on topic...I ran almost 5000 mah though it on a hot day in the dunes, no thermal issues. Stock gearing.

I'm having a similar issue with my Yeti. It was fine until very recently, now that the snow has melted and the temps are starting to get into the 50s +, it's started to shut off after about 10 minutes on 3s.

I'm going to order a 14t pinion to put on, but can someone explain how to update the ESC? This is the first I've heard of being able to update the firmware, and I'm unable to find any information on it.

You will need a Castle Link to do it or take it to your LHS and ask them to do it for you. It's in the software tab of the CL.
