Thanks for the info., Steve. I had a friend offer me a new copy of Windows 8 Professional for really cheap. I realize I don't care to have the "Pro" version of anything and that I would really need 8.1, but it appears Windows 8.1 is a free upgrade with Win Pro 8. Can anyone verify if that's true? If so, I think it's the way to go.

Also, I updated my build and decided to step up the video card to an R9 290:
AMD Athlon X4 760K, Sapphire Radeon R9 290, Cooler Master N200 - Tommy's Build - TommyR's Saved Part List - PCPartPicker

Woot! got my Class C racing license!
been racing away the last couple weeks creeping up my SR rating, and tonight had an awesome race that put me over the 3.0 requirement.

had a perfect race(0 incidents) at Lime Rock in the CTS-V.R, and had a pretty good charge up the pack too. started 16 and finished 6th

just had to share my stoke

Anyone try Sim Raceway yet? https://www.simraceway.com/

My new system was up and running after updating to Win 8.1 Pro, but after I cleaned up all the wiring so I could put the side panels on it hasn't been able to boot up. I just get a flashing cursor on the screen. Everything is plugged in properly and such.....I'm able to get into the BIOS.... It just won't boot.

What club are you guys in and what times do you usually race? I've been pretty busy the last few months and haven't raced since early spring. The Team Driving announcement got my attention though, so I want to drive again.

I'm in the West Club.

Finally got my new PC up and running (again). The hard drive was defective initially. Before I start racing I'd like to do some benchmarking of my system. Does anyone have a benchmark program to test the overall performance of a gaming PC?

Hoping to start racing within the next couple days!

I was quite into liveforspeed. Been through almost every beta test of theirs but slowly got out. What does that setup cost minus computer?

not a sim, but looks like some good driving fun
I like the car list, and love the body mods and customization.

That looks pretty interesting... I LOVE the idea of just racing randomly through cities all throughout the country. Unfortunately, I think the arcade-like invulnerability and crazy jumps may be what kills my interest. Now if they have a "realistic" mode or something.....well, that'd be a different story! The idea of doing a real "Cannonball Run" from coast to coast is intriguing!

By the way, my system has been done for a few weeks and I'm ready to race except for one major thing: monitors.

I've decided to go with three 23"-24" monitors, which is going to set me back a minimum of about $450. Since Christmas is coming up and is going to be pricey this year, I think that'll have to wait a bit.

If anyone has recommendations on what to look for in a quality simulation monitor trio, let me know. Right now these are my criteria:
  • 23-24" size, minimum
  • 3ms response time max
  • 1920x1080 resolution
  • DVI input

Realistically how much time do you need to put into the iRacing before you can lap decent? This thread has me really interested, as if I don't have enough things to fill up my time and spend money on. I only have a Xbox controller which I bought to play Wreckfest.

With the right equipment, not many! Seriously, it's remarkably realistic and if you could lap a car in real life half way decently, you'll be fine in iRacing....or any other sim for that matter!

But a reasonably powerful PC, quality monitor, and a good steering/pedal setup is key....along with a good driving position. Without all of these, the experience can be exceptionally lackluster and leave you disappointed.

I just built my PC and is reasonably powerful, Monitor is decent-ish. No Wheel or pedals and I fear if I did get some I might be rolling all over the laminate floor in the office. I might try it with the controller for the sake of the $15 it costs right now for 3 months and then decide if I want to dive in all the way. Thanks for the info.

it definatly takes more time than a video game, but not bad.
honestly it takes me probly 4 hours drive time for ME to feel like im race ready, each week for that particular track. most can do it in less (steve) but i like to have the track down pat before i get in a race with others.

the new track for the week comes out on mondays at 6pm. i ususally do 2 hours monday night, and another 1 or 2 tuesday evening, and enter first race tuesday night or wensday right after work. then do them all week (as desired) until the next monday.

You both bring up a good point. I'm not a console gamer.....haven't been for a few decades so if you are, you may have some habits to break or things to get used to that I didn't experience. I fear the console is going to prevent from having as good a time as you could have, but hopefully it's good enough for you to stick with it and get into the hobby!

Ok, I've spent some time doing some more research and watching a couple of guys on twitch and I definitely want to give this a try. However I am going to wait until I get a wheel. I'm now scanning kijiji daily for a used G27. The fallback is to wait for boxing day for a deal. It looks like a blast.

been meaning to post these pics for awhile.

did the nixim brake spring mod. ordered from UK and first one got lost for 6 weeks, so they had to send a 2nd one.

got the pedal set tore down and installing. you can see the difference in the stock silver spring, and the nixim beefy progressive brake spring with the rubber bump stop.

while i was in there i also came up with a gas/throttle spring mod. i always wanted more feel on the gas petal for like 10% throttle ie more pressure and feedback. so i made a 1/4" spacer out of two coils of 14g speaker wire (it was handy and quick)
been testing it for about a month and i love the added feel.

found out the hard way DONT try to run over the red apex curbs at Laguna Seca. did this twice in one race quite a ride.

got my B class licence!

also picked up the RUF Porsche and some tracks for the GT3 races to get the 20% discount
