| Powder Coating
Not sure where to post this as I am not looking for "parts" per say, but a service. Does anybody do powder coating on here? I'm looking to get a couple small aluminum motorcycle parts coated in satin black. Just wanting to see all my choices as I have talked to some people locally and their quotes seem high. Maybe I don't know what all is involved. |

Most places will have a minimum charge. To cover colour change cost.

I’ve thought about it. The baking in the oven part is what shuts me down. Or should I say my wife shuts me down, lol. For some reason she’s not crazy about baking powder coated parts in her oven.

My first oven was a toaster oven off of local CraigsList for $5. Then a house oven off of local CraigsList for $25. When i wanted to start doing bigger parts like brake rotors, calipers, K Members, rear axles etc my brother stepped in from his line of work. He is a certified welder for Otis Elevator and on one of his projects the Elevator doors got damaged during shipping. He brought them home and welded up a 6 x 4 box for me. I took the control panel and heating elements off the home oven and used that. Elevator doors are rated for 2hrs at 750deg so for a Powder bake it was no big deal. I say the above because once you start powder coating you will powder coat just about anything and if your strapped for $$ like me then you think outside of the box to save some $$. | |

The maker space that I go to has a powder coat spray booth and baking oven, a bench top "toaster oven" and a big ass walk in one that's 5'x5'x10'. Maybe look around to see if you have any maker spaces local to you. |

What constitutes expensive? If its not a major rush, have them shoot it when similar work comes in. Easy for me to start, I deal with 2 different guys in So Cal, one is always slammed so no setup charges and the other will do mine same day for a little more money provided he stocks the color. Satin black shouldn't be an issue. How big are the parts anyhow?

After doing some calling around, I decided to go a different route with these particular parts. Later model year bikes came with these parts black from the factory and after pricing them out, it became more economical to just order the black parts from Yamaha. I'm still interested in powder coating it sounds like a pretty handy thing to be able to do. I guess I can start off with a toaster oven and go from there. Thanks for all the replies guys. |
