Wraith servo choice?

Quick question, I have a RTR Wraith with the stock Axial servo, and a set of 2.2 pitbulls on it, since the tires have gone on the servo has really been working hard and not having much luck swinging the sticky tires from side to side. I use this truck mostly for crawling, lower speed stuff.

I understand the stock servo is supposed to put out approx 120oz torque, in an ideal world 300 oz of torque is recommended, but in the real world, how much torque is going to be enough to at least get it done without burning out.

PS: Waterproof always a bonus


Totally open to ideas, brands etc... thanks in advice.

Well, you're opening up a whole new procedure, not just a servo change. A BEC will need to be added as the stock Wraith ESC only handles 2A

I'm using Savox, but there's many other brands of servos and prices on the market that will work. Best bet is to have a look at some of the other member's posts and decide for yourself which way you want to go.

I went for overkill in my AX10 and put in a Hitec 7980 @ 611oz torque, and I love it. You'd probably be happy in the 300oz+ range, I'd look at the hitec 7955 or similar.

Hitec Servos <-- scroll to standard size, find the torque you want, get your servo. Prices are pretty good at servocity, shipping it $6 or $7, and they ship next day almost all the time. Check prices on all of em, some prices are crazy, and some with more torque cost less. o_O

My Wraith is built as a go slow rock crawling/trail rig and I stole the Hitec 7955TG off my old comp rig and it's the MIMINUM I would be happy with at 333oz.. I sometimes wish I had more. This is with 3.5oz of weight in each front rim.

Gotcha, so the 300 oz is truly the minimum recommended. Will have to go that route and waterproof it myself

The Wraith is particularly hard on servos. 300oz is a minumum. And most cheaper metal geared servos won't last without a saver if your doing anything over 5 mph.

Mine tore up three different 7954SH gearsets, and now has a Savox 2270 which I can reccomend. It's what I'd call spash resistant, but it's not waterproof out of the box.

Dont forget to swap out those flimsy steering rods! It doesn't matter how strong ur servo is, if you still have these plastic, bendy steering links, your tires are going nowhere...

just purchased a spektrum S6100 myself, im really liking it so far, 361oz of torque and will handle up to 7.4 volts.

I have the vanquish steering knuckles, and the metal steering rods, looking to pick up a set of metal lower links as well in the near future, yeah, need to get this thing dialed in, Can't crawl if the tires don't go where you want when you want them to. It seems fine for trail riding, but like I said, the second I put the Pitbulls on it I pretty much lost 75% of my steering when stopped.

So I'm getting that there may also be a problem with the amp output from the built in BEC on the speed control. Probably worth picking up a stand alone BEC. what amperage is needed, 5-6? This will be handy in the long run anyways as I hear I need to do that when I go to the 3s lipos in the future

Get a Castle Bec, it's worth it's weight in gold. $20 or so, 10A, input voltage up to 6s, programmable with the castle link (comes from castle programmed to 4.8v or 5v, so you need the link to program it). Stock probably puts out 5V which won't cut it in a bind, you need to be able to up it to 6-7.4v.

I ran 300oz in my super but for a 1.9 or 2.2 220oz is fine for less than 7 lbs rig, unless you want to spend the extra $$ and you comp it and and very hard on your steering.

dont use the ESC bec. unless maybe u are using Holms BRLTX ESC>

I'm using the Savox 1256tg in my wraith along with a BEC! great combo! with 277oz I find it to be enough and a good servo for $80

but if you want over 400oz the Futaba BLS152 is a grea choice I run one in my comp rig and its great!

P.S. if you still want to run the lights on your wraith and have your BEC ran straight to the servo the Holmes Hobbies RX bypass adapter is the way to go!

the Castl BEC's come preset at 5.1v, and changing them to 6-7.4v is a great way to get the most from your servos

Thanks for all the info guys, Castle BEC it is and I'll see if the local shop can program it for me while I"m there, They are quite helpful that way as far as troubleshooting and setup goes. And yeah, I've had really good experience with Hitec servos, easily available and pretty bomb proof, will probably go that way as well.

Ok, so got the Castle 10A BEC fitted no problem, need to wire in a switch in the future but it's working for now. For a servo I went with the Hitec HS-7954SH, should be 333oz of torque. BEC is set at 7V.

Everything seems fine, I can see what you guys mean, it pushes the pitbull 2.2's around no problem, but if you have it really twisted up and binding you can hear the servo working. Only thing is when the servo's at neutural "centered" with no input it tends to buzz lightly, not static type glitching, just a light buzz like it's not quite centered and still trying, is this normal for the stronger servos or is there something wrong with my setup?

If I play with the steering I can get it quiet, but if I just let go and let it self center I usually get the light buzz

My 7980 sounds like a bumblebee, I wouldn't worry about it.

The light buzz is normal for the 7954sh. If you have access to a servo programmer you can play with the center point setting and reduce it some. But I wouldn't go out and buy a programmer just for that.

I'm getting that too on my 7954. Called hitec and they said its normal. Not really assuring though. Thought it was my marine grease I put in.

marine grease packed in a servo wil cut its life in half.
