Default Brushed motor sparks

Question: my new HH 13t motor for twin hammers shoots sparks out after letting off the throttle with 20% drag brake is this normal? is this the brushes breaking in? My 35t torque master pro has sparking but not as much...yea im a motor noob

Normal to see more sparking with a lower turn motor as it is a more aggressive motor compared to a higher turn motor. Once your brushes have seated in properly, you should see less sparking.

after about 5 1300mah 3s batteries my motor lost all power and made a sparking popping noise, i took the top off and my motor and belly pan were covered in grey dust, i cleaned it all up as per HH tech notes and it runs again but the brushes look awful small to me, i havent put it back in the truck to see if it has any power, id post some pic off my cell phone but i dont know how

You may be a bit overgeared which heats the ESC & motor as well as shortens brush life.

Did you change gearing with the new motor, if so, what is it now?
What battery voltage?
Running in water, dust or sand?

Once you get to ~3/16" to 1/4" long brushes, you lose a fair amount of spring tension and the brushes rock more in their brush hoods which also speeds up wear.

As to "how to post pictures".... How do I post pics?

stock gearing...28 pinion and i forget the spur...1300mah 3s....and i did go in some water to cross a creek...but this motor has had an unusually large amount of sparking coming out the end since it was new, only when i let off the throttle though with 20% drag brake, some sparks shoot out like an inch, none of my other brushed motors do that

Others know your rig better, but I seem to remember a ~5:1 gear ratio is the starting point for a ~35T motor.

To get this, you would need a ~140T spur gear, not likely.

So, sounds like you're overgeared, then you throw in your current motor, really sounds like you're overgeared which heats things up and eats brushes.

it a 78t spur, this motor was made for a drop in replacement for the stock 15turn dynamite motor the only thing else i changed was dropped in a BRXL and 3s, would that be enough to heat it up to burn up brushes? cause the dynamite motor had no problems on 3s just not near the power as the HH 13t

When you went through the creak there could of been sand or dirt in the water which causes brushes to burn out WAY faster.

If its a wraith or an scx10 I can recommend getting an 87T spur and trying pinions from maybe 23 to 16 tooth to get what your wanting..Just always check motor temps.

If you cant hold your finger on the motor for at least 5 seconds before it starts burning you ;its too hot...I prefer to use a temp gage but anything over 140 150 is way too hot and will kill the life of your motor.

Im running in the 130-135 range with a 14t On a 27T and a 2s.

Seems a lot are happy with the 87/16 set up using a 3s..you get pretty much the same wheel speed as a 27T motor on a 2s using a 20t pinion but more torque.

Stock Twin Hammers apparently.

Overall ratio is Low: 32:1 High 18:1. Would drop the pinion a tooth or two at least.

I don't see any reason you should have inch long sparks coming out of the brushes though. A little sparking is normal from time to time, but should never be coming out of the endbell. Something is definitely wrong there.

yep 28/78 out of the box but it has 2 speed so i dont know what the ratio is in low....the stock 15t motor handled 3s and that gearing then when my HH 13t came in it lasted about an hour....way way more power though
