Default Could something like this be used as a bec?

I don't see why not. But i may be WAY wrong.

It looks as though it's the same concept. Unless you've already got one in hand, I don't see the point in ordering one when Castle has been making them for years and they're proven.

Was just curious actually. I have no reason not to get a castle the price is right and like you said, proven. Thank you though!

If you're looking for an alternative, a switching voltage regulator would be a better choice. Or, if you want super affordable, Hobbyking BECs are great for the money. I use them on my trucks and on my workbench for testing.

The part the OP is talking about really is a switching voltage regulator.
