I imagine 1000 guys all watching as one of them decides to walk up and piss on the electric fence. After his pecker blows off those watching say to themselves " I am not going to piss on that fence". Then here comes that one guy who swears there is not enough amperage to make his wiener explode and pisses on the same fence. Then while he is picking up the pieces of his blown off dong he thinks it must have been an anomaly.

Sounds interesting.

Back to the original question after a brief break for shenanigans...

You need a BEC when your electronics cut out from going lock to lock once with a high power servo. (300 oz/in @.08 sec in a 4x4 sct with an sv3)

You also will need a BEC when you run a really low power servo (hs-645mg) with an extra half amp or so of lights.

At this size of vehicle, electronics calculations are more points of reference than things to do hard math with (vs a full size vehicle, where loads are more predictable and thus can be more accurately calculated). As I know from running my sct, constant vs. burst current varies greatly and both can sometimes be disconcertingly large quantities (puffing a 90c 4600mah, about 400amps burst; about 25-30 amps constant, giving ~10 minutes runtime completely at WOT). Being on the edge yet within the margin mathematically often doesn't work out in the real world.

Basically, use the math for general reference but not for determining specific limits (exactly how powerful of a servo can I put in before needeing a BEC?).

^^^ really.......its simple! When you get a rig make a bec part of the deal. I like the blown off pecker comparison it seems fitting with this topic!!!

"A bec is like a sore dick ya cant beat it".......(STICKY)

So your SCX10 only needs a BEC if you have a spare tire. You are a wise man sir, clearly you have not been relieving yourself on electrified containment barriers.

Problem solved, everyone can go home.

If you need one for 2 wheel steering, logic says you need one for 4 wheel steering.
If you have 4ws you should consider 2 BECs if they are both good servos.

Guido has 3 BECs: one for the front steering, one for the rear steering, and one for the winch.

Glad I caught this thread! I hadn't given BEC's a second thought before, but I just threw one in (along with a Castle Link) with my order at RPP for my TF2 build. I'm only going to be running a ~200 oz-in Savox servo, but will be using a second servo for shifting. Plus I want to put lights on it if I ever hack my radio for my channels.

I should get one for my Yeti at some point, but that things got bigger problems than a lack of a BEC. It's not moving under its own power for a while.
