What I understand the 3rd channel switch is just a 2 position. Meaning you'd be full left turn or full right turn, no nuetral/straight. You need a 3 position switch for steering.

Then what is a good radio for 4WS? I have a 3PK that works with a wheel for the third channel...it is just a little more than what I need for rockcrawling. I guess I could always buy the spektrum module for it...

Chat'in with Bender...it seems that they old model (DX3) gives you a 3 position 3rd channel that allows you the ability to turn full left, full right and center.

I am going to try that one...

You are correct. I run a DX3 and have it set up that way.
I talked to my LHS guy and according to what Horizon Hobby told him, the DX3 is still available. You might want to get ahold of one while you can.

Start looking now...My understanding is that Spektrum is not shipping the old model. My LHS has two left. I am picking mine up tomorrow.

are there any plans to sell a downgrade for the 3.0 to the 3 for those of us who want a 3 position 3rd channel?
if not there should be.

what were they thinking by making a new (usually improved ) model that is actually worse? Maybe they weren't thinking.

If the switch itself is only a 2 position, than you'd have to replace the switch and do a download. I highly doubt that such a download exists, but I can't say for sure.

What I can say is that it sux to be you guys that have the 3.0. I'm glad I got my DX3 when I did.

JR did the same thing with the XR3 when they "upgraded" to synthesized in the XS3.

Has to do with "normal" rc'ers needs... most of the rest of the guys don't want or need a 3PS.

Same here twice. Maybe it is time to start scouring ebay for some more used ones.

I called them and they said that if you set it Linear it will move left and right. The only thing is that you will need to center it yourself. I am going to try it on the DX3 that I have now. I may go with the 3.0 if that is the case. That is how my 3PK was and I liked the adjustability of the rear steering.

I will let you guys know.

Here is the response that Horizon Hobbies gave me:

Comments: I am looking to buy one of your DX3.0 Systems. I am using it for rock crawling and need the 3rd channel to activate rear steering. Will this radio have the ability to do this independantly of the front?
I have a Futaba 3PK that gives me the ability to turn the rear wheels any degree.
Please advise on your equipments ability to fill this need.

Thanks,
John

You can leave the third channel as linear and then change the rear steering. If you have any further questions please feel free to give usa call at 1-877-504-0233

I tried the linear setting the other day... it moves agonizingly slow- I'd rather deal with 2 speeds on my hi-lift (until I figure out another solution) than waiting 30 seconds to get from 1st to 3rd.

Basicly the Linear mode is a trim mode, and it moves at the speed of adjusting a trim. Very slow as it does not speed up as you hold it.

He did say that it is slow. Going down to check mine now. My 3pk was a wheel that would turn as fast as I turned it...

The DX3 is the exact same radio as the XR3, but with Spektrum technology instead of FM. Other than that, same case(different color, but same mold), same steering wheel(under the cover) same circut boards and software inside the radio, made by the same company(Horizon, which owns JR). The DX2 is the same as a JR XR2, but Spektrum instead of AM. The newer DX2.0 and DX3.0 are just Spektrum-upgraded XR2i and XR3i radios.

I had been using my XR3's for indy rear steer for a while before they started replacing the XR3's with the XR3i's and when I found out that the newer versions only had a 2 position switch, I hoarded XR3's figuring that they would come in handy for keeping my trucks running the way I like for a while to come. When I discovered that the XR3 was back, but with Spektrum now and re-named the DX3, I was extremely happy and jumped at the chance to get one. Now they are going through the same model and software progression that killed the XR3 and I have to wonder why, the DX3 is fine the way it is, please don't discontinue it like the XR3....

It's much easier to modify a DX3/XR3 to handle gear shifting(2 and 3 speed) AND rear steering than it is to modify a DX3.0/XR3i to handle rear steering in any way other than agonizingly slow linear mode...

If you want a nice radio that's 2.4Ghz and can do anything, check out the Nomadio React.

Four channel pistol grip radio with all kinds of programming options that you can make through your PC.

Most versatile transmitter on the market.

I'm using one.
