Default Hobbywing 1080 vs Holmes Hobbies TRBR-XL

Im wondering if I should go ahead and get the 1080 or save up another month and get the HH brushed controller. Any thoughts / experiences on this? I will use an external BEC irrespective of which controller I go with. I take my truck out a few times a week, and I do a pretty even split between rock crawling and trail walking.

I have had both. I really like the HH BRXL (I have two), they are very smooth. Unlike any ESC I’ve ever used but the price tag is hard to justify when you have several vehicles and I do not compete in events. I do also have 3 WP1080 and feel like for the money they are a really great ESC. I will continue to get WP1080s because they are really affordable and highly tunable. They are my “go to” ESC right now. I do not think you will have regrets either way.

Id like to compete but there doesnt seem to be anything within an 8 hr drive near me here in Iowa. Does the 1080 have as many tuning variables as the holmes does?

With the HH I used the Castle Link and you get a nice UI on your computer. The WP1080 uses a program card which is easy to use anywhere. They just do not go into a lot of explanation on the various setting but there seems to be a lot of resources/opinions online. The nice thing about the WP1080 you can program it, try it out, then tinker with your settings right in the field. It really is a nice ESC for the money. I also do not have any where to really compete where I am. Plus time is a factor at the moment, between a lot of overtime at work and family. So for know I have seven wooded acres to run around on.

The WP1080 has 15 different features you can program and the HH has 7 I think. The HH has more specific setting where the WP1080 has various presets for each of the 15 features.

Oh wow thats cool. Do you know of any good threads / websites that go over the details on the 1080? Ive looked at the documentation but its a pretty poor translation.

That has been my goal with my land. The wife has been encouraging me in that direction. I’d love to create a place where people could come and have fun as a family crawling and trailing.

Sounds like a great idea. You could incentivize people to bring some piece of scrap wood/metal/stone to add to the course as a sort of entry fee. I know its very easy / cheap to get broken concrete too. I live in a sorta podunk town and I think Im the only person who does RC in the whole 5k population town.

Default Hobbywing 1080 vs Holmes Hobbies TRBR-XL

JBoucher has started a decent thread here in the electronics forum and there are several replies. I started with the default settings and tweaked things here and there.

I did learn, though I never owned one, Castle has a field programmer that works with the Holmes ESC. The crazy thing is you can own 2 WP1080 (with program card) for less than 1 Holmes BRXL and the program card or Castle link is an extra $20-25.

I have no experience with the TRBR-XL, but I will say everybody should have a HobbyWing WP 1080. They are a steal for what you get at $40 and they can be used on and off-road.

Is the TRBR-XL brushed only?

I did install a Castle Mamba X in my SCX10 II. It's very cool. It's smooth, but I wouldn't say any smoother than the 1080. I do like that it's more adjustable and the Auxiliary Wire is awesome. But is it worth the 3.5 times price premium you pay over the HobbyWing 1080? Not for the majority of cases IMO.

The big thing the BR-XL has going for it is the voltage input levels. If you are a 4S+ brushed motor comp guy, then the BR-XL is the best option. Normal trail driving on 2 or 3S, probably won't notice too much of a difference.

However, if you are willing to pony up for a BR-XL then why not spend a little more and get a ESC that can do brushed and brushless like the BLE or Mamba X? Then you are set for your needs now and in the future.

didnt know the ble or mamba x could do brushed too. Thats cool. I run brushless in my basher, but Ive always read that brushed is better for crawling.

Typically most crawlers use brushed or sensored brushless motors because they are smoother operating at low RPM. Unsensored brushless tend to cog and stutter at low RPM (higher pole unsensored motors can be used however with some success). I understand Castle is working on more brushless ESCs and motors for Crawlers/Scalers. Definitely something to look forward to in the future. (BigSquidRC podcast #2 with Castle Creations).

That’s good to hear, the mamba x is super expensive compared to even their crawler edition. Brushless motors seem to cost so much more than brushed for similar low speed performance

The draw to brushless is their efficiency and power. I like brushless in my go fast vehicles and aircraft but prefer brushed in my low speed scale rigs.

One of brushless motors MAIN advantages is that they require very little maintenance.

The occasional replacement of the bearings is about all there is, oil them if you go through water.
