The clip is what stops against the bearing and keeps the axle from coming out.

In short, yes.

Stacked a set of minis this evening for a customer. Figured I'd make a little rough how-to on the process for those not so confident on the process.

Do your front tubes allow for a 7980?

Looking at mine Ted I'd say no. A 9380(same dimensions as 7950s) is extremely tight.

The tubes don't really change the clearance. If you were running a 7980 before, it should still fit. It really depends on what pinion you're running.

Worst case you grind the tube down so the axle shaft is exposed, and make a slightly bigger servo mount.

Correction, the tube will allow it, the servo mount we have is not wide enough. I was originally going to make one for it, but you are only the second to ask. I can re-check tonight to see how easy it would be to modify the current one.

I don't doubt what Tom is saying. He surely has seen more of the tubes than I have but it would be a really tight go. My tube are machine all the the way through and a 7950 is still scrunched in there with 14t pinions and a full diameter motor.
