I tried that SE gear box mod a while back but was never happy with the way I installed it. I am anxious to see how you do it.

I had trouble with the first one I did. The pinion would skip teeth under high loads mostly due to a ton of slop in the se gearbox. I was running it direct to the final drive gear on the axle. The second one I did I kept the other gear and shortened the pinion shaft as much as possible. This one worked flawlessly though I preferred the higher gearing of the other set up. This one will be slightly different as well. I wanted the motor lower and farther forward so I had to do some extra hacking and bracket building. I'll be sure to take a few more pics along the way. Any pics or info of how yours was mounted? |

Progress... Had to hack out a spot for the reduction box to sit low and forward. Without the hacking, the pinion won't mesh. I ended up reinforcing the chassis with a piece of aluminum also. Couple of shots with final trim to fit and the tab to hold the box. Test fit. Mesh looks good. Hope to be able to adjust it some by bending the tab. |

| No. I ended up doing the standard gear reduction with the stock MT gears instead... I tried it initially with the Willys I did. I also ruined a micro servo trying to hack it for a GR. My fatal flaw in the SE GR was that I didn't shave down the original casing like you did and couldn't find a place to mount it that didn't look like hell.

Right on. That casing's almost shaved too much. I thought I'd gone too far and ground some teeth on the gears. All was well on closer inspection.

Can't tell you how many times I've been asked that. With minimal mods to this body $300 I guess. Much less and I'd be working for sweat shop rates. Parts and materials run about $80 - $100. |

Takes a freaking long time to build one of these... a lot longer than you would think. I'd tack on an extra hundred just for the damn hand cramps.

Getting closer... Attached the pinion for the se gearbox. This is where really tiny drill bits come in handy. Made a bracket to mount to the bottom of the gearbox and hold the motor. Motor epoxied in. I like to run it while I'm waiting for it to set a bit to ensure proper gear mesh. Gearbox assy. epoxied on. Once again I run it while gluing to ensure gear mesh. I have video of this as well but it's not very exciting. Battery mock up. Gonna be a tight fit. May extend the w/b again just to get some breathing room. I still want to add a bulkhead in the rear btw. the board and motor to mount the springs and the body. Last edited by redrustbucket; 02-15-2009 at 10:32 PM. |

Thanks. Don't worry, no one has. I'm not building it to sell, but invariably someone always asks, "How much for one?"

Got some stuff done today. Managed to mount the pinion to the planetary for the steering. That's 20x reduction there plus the 200:1 it already had. We'll see if it's too slow. Got some of the electronics wired up. Was a little scary when I dead shorted the lipo by mistake. It was just for an instant but that thing got scary hot. Should probably change it but I think I'll let it ride. Also had to build a new driveshaft when it stuck on me during gluing. Other than that it's moving along. |

Yep. HERE Getting the pinion on is the tricky part. You have to grind it down then drill it as close to center as possible. I used the shaft from stock motor and epoxied the pinion and shaft together to it. I glued it while it was rotating to center it as well. This place has some good stuff too. The shafts are 1.2 mm though so it may take some finagling to use also. PLANETARY MOTORS Last edited by redrustbucket; 02-18-2009 at 03:45 PM. |

all i can say is WOW! ZZMT got me into the hobby. like 3-4 years ago me and my dad got them for christmas, and spent DAYZ building lil corses for them. then about 4 of my buddies bought them, and we turned a spare room in my old apartment into like a zip zap mountain w jumps and boobytraps, and would play capture the flag. what you have done is amazing!!! i want one of your zip zaps lol |

Thanks. They also got me into r/c crawling. I found this site searching to see if anyone else was turning them into crawlers.
