The flat spots get worked out of the tires & foams pretty quickly and I run good shocks so they don't bleed out while sitting.

Probably because I’m not too bright, my best C2 comp rig is my kid’s TRX4 and I’m building my wife a TRX4 comp rig....
Same here. X4's for comps are fantastic!

On the other hand, perhaps they were some properly set up X4's.

Maybe, stranger things have happened. Without knowing specifics we just don't know.

Yes, and to be fair, it isn't just the truck or the setups. From what I've seen driver skill is a huge factor in competitions.

Is X4 short for TRX4?

You're welcome and welcome to the scene! Everybody writes out TRX4 but I'm good with X4 for brevity.

I'm on the fence between a trx4 sport kit and the element Enduro kit. Coming from the clay racing world, I built all of my TLR kits in the past. I enjoy building and picking my own Electronics. My birthday is in about two weeks , so I need to make a decision here as this will be a birthday present from the fam.

The quality of the TRX-4 kit will surprise you. If you want portals go with the TRX-4, but if you want straight axles go with the Enduro.

My C2 is bottom center. Nothing crazy just a good collection of parts and some tuning. As much as I'd like the C3 to beat it things just don't work out that way.

Here are the two rigs in question....

Both the 10.2 and TRX4 have a little bit of brass, AXE systems, strong servos, droop/semi droop shocks, aluminum panhard/ shock mounts and the 10.2 has overdrive gears in the front...

10.2

TRX4

TRX4 I’m building for my wife...

I've heard both sides of the fence, meaning portals will give the truck a high COG and make it more prone to tipping over, where a straight axle sits lower and isn't as tippy. I know that the high COG can be addressed and fixed. I've seen videos were both trucks can climb like a goat, and I've seen other videos just the opposite where they can't climb for nothing. I guess it's all in the tuning of the suspension and the truck

It's true that portals have pros and cons and so do straight axles.

For sure they all have trade offs. Most portals have good ground clearance at the expense of scrub steer, bad steering angle and very low gearing. That low gearing also helps alleviate torque twist too.

Straight axles typically have less ground clearance but better steering angle and are more prone to torque twist due to higher gearing in the axles.

The single biggest advantage to a trx4 is the unlocking rear differential. On climbs you can unlock the rear and it almost acts like a front dig to pivot the rig around. I use that constantly on my trx4 rigs. Conversely my class 2 has 60* steering angle so it doesn't need the rear to be open to make a sharp turn.

That's part of the reason my TRX-4 stole my attention. The shifting and remote locking diffs just add a new experience and it's not all for the sake of a gimmick. The Sport doesn't have that though which is why I didn't mention it. Personally, I have thought about adding remote locking diffs to my Sport, but not two-speed.

You can add remote locking diffs to the sport?? How?

Sure. Remove the locker and install the associated parts needed to make the remote lockers functional. I pulled the front switchable locker out of my class 3 in place of a locked up spool. Not a big deal but you'll need a radio to control the servo.

No doubt about it, that 60* steering angle is pretty sweet. While not nearly as good, but still pretty good, is the improvement in steering gained on the X4 by using the OD/UD combination. My friend runs OD/UD and I prefer just UD. Side by side the improvement in turning radius is very clear - the combination is better and a certain improvement over stock. I just started to wonder while writing this, and thinking about the SSD portal delete kit, how much of an improvement in steering might be gained with the delete? Hmmm...
