Default Need Pics - Broken Driveshafts

Like the subject says - I need some pics of your broken, busted, or twisted driveshafts.

The better the details, the better the pic, the better.

Carnage is good.

I am working on a design of some super strong shafts, and am wondering how everyone is breaking their shafts. I know the common problem is the setscrews coming loose and causing havoc, or them not coming out because they are rusted in place. Stainless steel fixes that problem, but I need to know if the shafts fail in the tubes, at the universals, or some place else?

OR, are your u-joints and CV's simply wearing out and causing lots of drive line slop..

Post up links or pics, pm, or e-mail me please.

Thank you everyone..

Sorry everyone, I also should have posted and said, if you are running all metal drive shafts, e.g. punishers, MIP CVD's, Junfac, those would be ideal.

I am working on Big Oly and want shafts that I don't have to worry about. The company I am working with builds shafts that go in to military and medical applications. Industrial not commercial grade.
So they want to have as much data as possible when going in to this. They realize there isn't going to be a ton of money in this venture, so no money for R&D.
Basically, we want to use your experiences and info, to build some BOMB PROOF shafts.

These will not be cheap. I will admidt that. We are talking they could be $150 - $200 a set. But these shafts would be the last ones you will ever buy.
I'm not in this to make money guys, just looking to get some driveshafts made that will stand up, and maybe help some other guys out with the same problem.

Stock Axial shafts tend to twist at the ears. I've saw the smaller inner shaft candy cane using rings over the ears also. That said I've never saw a MIP break under any amount of power, every other stock part in the drivetrain and most upgraded ones will break first. I've saw Robinson lockers snap and no axle shy of 300's will outlast a MIP driveshaft.

I run Maxx shafts and never broken one. Not even in a 12lb rig with VXL on 3S.
No need for anything else so far.

Why do you need two different threads on this?

Do you run an adapter for the maxx shafts, like the one Crawler Innovations makes?

My concern is more pieces in the drive train cause problems. The other problem I have is the length and angle of the front shaft. It is short and on a pretty sharp angle, so anything I add to the outputs or pinon will cause the shaft to be shorter and make the angle worse.

I've got one rig, AX-10, that is over three-years old and now converted to a SCX, it has hundreds of hours on it. Stock, original shafts. Never broke. My key to drivetrain longevity-the slipper, it's on there for a reason......... . I just set-up for some slip at high bind-loads. It works!!!

But yes, the set-grubs do suck and wear-out. My thoughts would be the Traxxas-like through-pin set-up would be and end-all to those problems. That's my only complaint with the stock-shafts.

I make them using the Maxx Shafts Made Easy technique. There is an adapter but it doesn't add any length. I agree, adding length can cause problems.

Maxx Shafts made easy.

On mips where the pin goes through the cup side tends to enlongate causing major drive shaft slop. And I hate it! Also a main key is getting the male and female parts of the shafts the fit together nicely. And not have anyslop there either.

Just realized how bad the last 2sentances sounded.

Only thing i hate about all driveshafts is the small set screws. they either back out, or wont come out and you end up stripping them. but like was said before, the traxxas set screw/pin combo fixes that. honestly, i dont see people spending 150.00-200.00 on a set of shafts when you can get MIP's for about 50 bucks.

And you might wat to be carefull, this sort of sounds like a feeler thread. which is a big no-no.

Please let me be VERY CLEAR...

THIS IS NOT A FEELER THREAD.....

I would like to see how drive shafts are failing.

I agree, with the price of a set of MIP's being around $50, is it reasonable to think that everyone on here would want a set of $200 drivesafts, NO.
But this thread isn't about that.
I would like to see how people are breaking shafts, and would like to see some pictures of the carnage.. That's all..
I figured everyone would just want a little background on why I would like the info..

If the mods want to call that a feeler, then delete this thread and I apologize..

Well, I just don't see the shafts being that practical. I have yet to see anyone break an MIP shaft, and i doubt anyone will make a motor that can break an mip shaft. if they wear out, just buy a rebuild kit for 13.99. but thats just my 2 cents.

Lol run brushless system 18.5t 9oz in from 6oz in the back on a sxc10 with 2.2's set your slipper and know how to drive it seems problems are rare. I only updated to mip for the fun of it I ran for three months every weekend on sock..

Holy shit guys?!?!? Wtf? You got any pics of broken shafts for him to see??? No?.......... Then shut up and move on! If you think 200$ for a set of shafts is too expensive.......then don't buy them!

This guy is trying to do his research and build a good product, not get beat up on his ideas!

Sorry it just really pisses me off when people jump your shit for thinking outside the box and do it yourself!
