Default Most capable scale crawler chassis? - Shoot me now..

Hey up...

I realise this is a can of worms, but what is the most accomplished and capable (in action not looks) scale crawler kit / chassis? This will be with coil springs not leafs.

I realise that driver skill and tyre choice probably make the largest difference in most cases but which chassis is winning comps the most and generally considered the best platform?.

My question comes as i am performance minded and am trying to work out which chassis / kit to base my next project on. The choices currently sit between; TRx4, SCX10 2 or Ascender. I know the Axials have been around the longest and will probably have the strongest following...

Thanks...

All 3 work fine. You just gotta pick one and go.

If you are strictly performance driven then build your own, I’d likely start with a Toyzuki V2 SCX10 2 chassis and go from there.

Thanks lads.

I did see the Toyzuki chassis and fell in love "thumbs".

And of course I realise to get the best performance you need to build your own but just looking at which platform to start with.

I do have some old AX10 axles on a half built shafty project I could use. These already have upgrades including the XR10 front mods and overdrive front gears... Don't know how these stack up against the SCX10 version 2 axles? Looks to mostly be the pumpkin size as a limit..

Those axles are old technology, if you are doing a new build I'd go with the latest & greatest. The Toyzuki chassis has the option built in to overdrive the front axle. I'd go with some Vanquish F9's, or Rock Jocks for the SCX10-II, filled with all of their goodies (gear set, locker, axles, knuckles). Another option is SSD's latest offerings for the SCX10-II, which have metal axle tubes and plastic housings, which would slide over rocks better than the VP's and are a hell of a lot cheaper.

Thanks. Whilst the VPs look completely delicious their pumpkin size looks large and their cost + shiny bits is just not an option. I like SSD stuff and their axle strikes a good balance...

The pumpkins on the SCX10 II versions are small, but the SSD are a very good budget friendly option!

May I know, Beside Toyzuki V2 has build in overdrive or else makes overdrive trans or bevel and ring gear for SCX10 II?

I’m using GCM’s new transmission kit for the II, it’s an awesome piece that adds scale looks and the transfer case overdrives the front axle.

Are the new SSD pumpkins are larger than Axial's?

I don’t believe so. I don’t own a set (yet), but I thought I’d read somewhere that they’re the same size. Relatively anyways.

I don't like the portals on the TRX-4, they keep you from using the inner sidewall to pull a wheel up an obstacle

This is my largest concern with the portals - that enlarged C hub section...

I can also see it hanging on stuff easier.....

In RCSparks' video you can see where it drags a wheel up a whole obstacle due to hanging the portal over an edge. The Ascender didn't have that to contend with and hopped up it easily in the same video iirc.

(I'm also envious of their 2spd, but I'll be rectifying that.)

Traxxas parts are higher quality than Axial. The diff locks and 2 speed on the TRX-4 are fun to play with but that is extra weight and complexity. OUT OF THE BOX I think the 10.2 is a better performer but ditch the heavy Land Rover body, add some brass portal covers, and get smaller bumpers and its going to be extremely close in performance.

I will look at my c hubs to see if they have many marks on them, but I cant think of a time where they have hung me up. I do know that when I was switching from my Ascender or 10.2 to my SCX10, I would bash the center pumpkin a lot and get hung up. I do the same when switching from my TRX-4 to my 10.2 now.

Portals require a bit different line, vs the pumpkin down low. I know when I switched from a R1 to the wraith, totally different lines were needed. While I
miss the portals, I learned different lines and have few issues. I do use a tall shock package for extra clearance

Hang up and Drive
