Material wise is simple... Styrene for the small plastic parts, cheap and durable, easy to paint too. As for Axles and stressed members and high tolerances...PolyCarb is the only option in my mind. |

I was reading this and had to register to give my opinion. I am a RV designer using SolidWorks 2008. One thing to consider for mold material is what the exotherm of the part will be and how will the mold react to this. the company i work for is my fathers and we design and manufacture fiberglass RV front and rear caps and side walls, we also have a plastics devision that uses METTON (dycylopentadiene). we were the first company in the world to inject METTON into a 18ft long mold successfully (full size van running boards) we have a full mold building shop with a 5 axis CNC machine big enough to cut a full class A front end, a 3 axis CNC and a 3 axis aluminum CNC. our RIM molds are out of aluminum with water lines in them so we can keep the temperature around 150deg, while the METTON will flash around 350deg. for temporary tooling (1-250 parts) you could use a resin mold or a ceramic mold or even a fiberglass mold. One idea i have is say screw plastic and make them out of fiberglass resin (just resin no fiberglass), then the mold could be made out of plastic, bondo, ceramic or even foam. If somebody would like to try it the ideal setup would be around 70deg outside with a 2% catalyst to resin ratio. IE: 2cc of catalyst to 100cc of resin, time for the resin to setup would be 15-20min. Its 1:20 in the morning so if i have any mistakes please don't hesitate to correct them!! -Brian |
