| scx10 gearing question
I have a Tekin T45hd motor - and I've picked up a Traxxas 54 tooth 32 pitch spur as well as a 20 tooth 32 pitch pinion. Will this work for crawling and doing some trail or should I have picked up a lower toothed pinion like an 8 or 9 tooth pinion? Thanks for the Help |

Good motor choice! but i would go down to a 18 tooth pinion, you might be to fast with the 20 tooth, not real sure thou, maybe even down to a 16 tooth, bolt it on an drive it around watch the motor see if its getting warm or hot, if so go down on the pinion.

Your current gear selection is very likely to make you really unhappy. You're horrendously over-geared. An 8 or 9 tooth pinion would be a very good idea, however I don't know if your motor adjustment slots will allow you to get your motor close enough to the spur. If you get everything on, and can't get enough adjustment, I'd say look at either a 9/56 or possibly a 9 or 10/58 combo. The pinion you now have would probably make a nice motor stand, though. |

Sounds like you're going to be buying pinion and spur. You may as well go 48-pitch. Better selection. I run 16/90 at 48-pitch. Motor never gets hot. And if you're worried about 48-pitch not holding up, I've been on the same 48-pitch spur for about 2yrs. I run a Holmes BRXL, Crawlmaster Pro 13T on 3s and 4s. The same gearing has also been used with a MMP/Tekin Redline 13.5/3s and 4s setup. Plenty strong. -Brian |

I've found the sweet spot for spur/pinion ratio to be 4.5-5. You'll be wayyyyyyy overgeared. 2.7 to be exact. Go with like a 12t pinion with that particular spur.

I had a suspicion that it was not the right pinon, its just what the hobby shop sold me. I took the pinion back but they didnt have one low enough, so I ended up getting a Robinson 87 tooth 48 pitch along with a 14 tooth pinion. But i did keep the spur and will see if i can get it to work with a 8 - 12 tooth pinion later. But your probably right, I hadn't even thought about them not being able to reach. Thanks to everyone who answered. It was very helpful. Last edited by rcwolf; 05-09-2013 at 06:25 PM. | |
