Default Work Surface

Since I'm a newbie I'll post this here for everyone. Iv'e owned my stained glass company for 17 years now. The material I use on my build table is Homasote. It's used a sound dampening material. Its VERY fire resistant, I lay my 900 watt soldering iron on it sometimes. Its dense enough that I can drive push pins or nails into it and its self healing. (holes fill in) A newbie or even a pro that lacks work surface, this is the stuff. It cost about $35 -$40 for a 4'x 8' x 1/2" sheet. I have a 4x8 table but I also have several 2'x2' pieces. I can take one into the living room and work on my Wraith and not damage any furniture. For guys that fabricate this is perfect because you can pin your stock together and braze or weld away. ( It will blacken it under constant flame for several seconds). The biggest benefit I found is, I can leave my project on a piece and put it away until I'm ready to work on it again, without taking up my work area. Look in the phone book for contractors that do media rooms or sound proofing. They may just give you there scraps.
