Default Brushless servo with brushed esc

Can you run a brushless servo with an ae5 brushed esc? I have a new bomber coming in and was considering getting a promodeler 470, but its advertised as brushless. I'm also open to suggestions for low price high torque servos. Waterproofed would be nice bit o can do that myself too.

Are you trying to use the servo for steering or as a winch?

Fortunately you dont need to worry about brushed vs brushless with servos, any ESC will work. If it were the motor on the other hand it would matter.

I really like the build of the Promodeler servos but I was disappointed with how it performed, it seemed to stall much easier than it should for its torque figures.

I've had good luck with the Holmes Hobbies SHV500 V2 servo, though if you bash it has a weak point at the center pin, but its very powerful and seems to never stall.
Hitec is also a good choice.

This would be for steering.

Thanks for sharing your experience with the promodeler. The shv500 you mention is a bit limiting because of like to be able to run a 2s battery now and then. That one needs at least 11 volts.

Ohh yeah, I'm also looking at the savox 1320, but I'm not sure about centering and if that's really even an issue I need to be concerned with. I have a 1231 in my scx10ii and it runs just fine. It does seem a tad weaker than the advertised numbers but I'm not running a bec so it's only getting 4.8 volts through the AE-5.

Theres also the standard HV500 v2 which can run off 6V-8.4V, but Savox also has some good powerful servos.

That looks like a good choice. Thanks!

To answer the original question, Yes, you can run a brushless servo on a brushed esc. The ESC has no idea if your servo is brushed or brushless. Just like your receiver has no idea if your main motor is brushed or brushless.

The only issue you might run into is the same one you could have with a brushed servo, which is that the esc's BEC might not be up to the task of powering a high torque servo, especially if you are running more than 2 cell lipo.

Thanks for the clarity. I picked up an shv500 and I'll run it directly to the 3s battery using a servo extension. That should do the trick.

All of this is just to plan ahead so I have parts on hand when the stock ones go. This bomber is a project for my son to tinker with. I also picked up some stainless links and a set of cheap chinese aluminum trailing arms. I plan to see how the "GDS" trailing arms work out and then mill the ends flat, tap it for m4 threads and put traxxas ends on instead of the metal to metal setup they came with. That way I can replace ends as needed.
