Default HPI RS4 Rally

Just picked one up on ebay. I had an original RS4 when they first came out (with the rear gearbox), kind of wish I never got rid of it. Thinking of getting a Focus body for it and running it on our SC track in back.

Any build threads that people know of, or forums that have tech sections for these? I'm pretty much on here and on RCSC only. Kind of wondering what people are running for motors.

My tentative parts list:

Sidewinder ESC
2S Lipo
4PL
Traxxas 2075 waterproof servo

I'm going to try to make it as water resistant as I can, so may dip the ESC and put in a Rustler waterproof RX box. We'll see.

Just for the hell of it, these are some old pics of my RS4 from back in the day.

there is a forum site called the scale builders guild, they have a few good reviews on some of the rally platform.

the interweb wasn't that big back in 1996 when the RS4 came out ;)

i've still got most of mine... 1 electric & 1 Nitro RS4

these things are pretty much bulletproof, main wear-n-tear are the dogbone cups & belts

a lot of parts from Sprint/Sprint2 can be used but i'm told Rally's chassis plate is rare HTF as spareparts now

Debating on 4600 kV vs 5700 kV motor. Will run 2S. Any input?

I still have my late 90's RS4 Rally. It just sits around now but it got me back into RC when I pulled it out of the attic last year. I ran it around some and had some fun but it was way too fast for my 4 year old and that's how I got into scalers. But he still just wants to go fast...
I'm kind of wanting an Exo now to satisfy both of our need for speed.

Sell, trade, I'm always open.
It has the carbon fiber lower chassis and diff plate. I have the rally shocks and aluminum touring shocks and about 5 sets of wheels and tires. It spent most if it's time as a touring car since the rally thing really never took off and touring was easy to find spots to run.

Are the belts for the Rally available?

I've always wanted one, but the lack of parts availability has scared me away. I keep hoping they'll remake it with shaft drive RS4MT drivetrain.

Shame that noone else makes a worthy rally car, IMO. The kyosho and Tamiya versions are kind of a joke.

I still have mine my RS4 Rally. Has sedan tires on it now because the rally ones went bad. Mine even has an unpainted inner body with the sticker sheet. The only bad is it had the disco'ed Peugeot body that I put a ghetto paint job on in the early '90's.

I'm picking up what I can here or eBay. I'll do one and have one spare. Working on the track today.

Umm yeah thats not right. The Tamiya DF03ra is a good car and the Tamiya TB01 is a great car. These two cars are the best rally cars out there, hands down better then the HPI. The only car that outdrives these two cars is the Losi xxxs (with tons of tuning) and it doesn't have even close to the same amount of durability.

So, seeing as I'm just getting into this, should I rethink my choice of cars and go with a Tamiya rather than trying to get the RS4s going? I know they are hard to find parts for, but from a performance standpoint, are they that much better? What about a TC3 conversion?

Just getting some ideas for a paint scheme. Would like to do a Focus body, but can't find them anywhere.

I'm liking 3 & 4 on the Focus body, unsure on the Subaru ones.

I kind of have a color scheme thing going on with the orange/white/blue. Not exactly sure where it came from.

Well, deal on the Focus bodies fell through, so back to the Impreza! Like them both, so not really a loss.

OK, few more paint ideas. Picked up another roller off CL, so should have enough to start getting this thing put together!

Leaning towards the last one.
