Default HD's Scale Rubicon Redcat

I built this a while ago on another forum. Thought I'd share it here...

I did a little work on the shocks after I painted the chassis and polished my Integy bent links. I removed the big standard springs and installed some out of a toy grade that were smaller. I had to glue a slice of 3/8 OD airline on the inside of each end of the springs.

I also used some peices of aluminum on each corner of the chassis to extend it out further to get my shocks upright when I put them close to the axle. Due to where the shock mounts needed to be, the clearance between the motor on the axle is what brought me to changing out the springs.

And here's what the whole setup looks like now. I drove it around for a little bit and wow, what a difference in handling. Wheelbase compression on steep climbs has went down by alot. Basically it doesn't feel like a slinky anymore.

I got this Jeep Rubicon shell from Tower Hobbies and started trimming and masking last night, here's the progress so far.

I made a snorkel out of a ink pen, a small piece of mesh, scuff pad and some left over lexan.

I hot glued the lexan on the end of the tube and painted it all flat black. I then pushed the small peice of material in the opening in the lexan and glue the mesh on. And presto le snorkel it was done. I trimmed out some details to simulate clamps. The scariest part was drilling holes in the new body. I'm going to attched it with zip ties. Here's the finished product.

Your rig is one of the few 2.2 rigs with a scale body on it that I actually like. Most of them either have the body mounted obscenely high, or the body is butchered by being trimmed so much. Good job

ty sir. This was the frst new shell I've painted. They've always been hard bodies or flat blacked. I'll eventually make some better frame rails, but these work fine for now.

Tractor tires on the Redcat.

I made these for running in deep mud bogs and in snow. I've got a line on some Maxx rims to narrow for these tires, along with a Honcho bumper. Should turn out nicely.

not sure if you did it on purpose, but tractor tires are designed to run the other direction for masimum grab and pull.

I put them on in this direction to grab the edges of rocks. If I'm going to run them through mud or snow I'll switch them around to push the mud/snow out from undernieth them.

The only concern I have is that they aren't very soft. I think they're to stiff for crawling, I made them for mud bogging & snow, but we'll see. I'm going to try the same lines as I have with my Swamp Dawgs and Losi Claws and see how they line up. Video will be coming soon for this rig with the new tires and my WK FOFF

yeah, me either. They'll be good for all around bashing and thats about it. But you gotta admit, they look pretty damn good on there.

these tires SUCK on the rocks. They are good for trail riding and deep water/mud and that is it. I'll do another video with these soon. I did get some good video of the FOFF in action tho.

My front bumper came in last night. It's a Honcho bumper. Can't beat the price. It was completely free. I tried paying benzoel for it, shipping, gas money...wouldn't take a dime. I'll be looking for a way to pay forward the favor. Now I just gotta work out a bracket to mount it to the frame. I'm thinking about trying to scratch up a honcho frame too. I think it'll match up with the setup I have here. Either way, I've got to come up with a game plan for a new chassis.

I have been working on some ideas for a scaler chassis for these, not sure when i will make it happen, the motorcycle project currently has all my attention. but i am thinking something cut from a solid piece of aluminum, same basic side plates we have now and extended uppers kinda like what you have. allows for over axel shock mount, lower height and more link options.

I've got a plan for one drawn up. I've just got to get the material locked down and fab it up. My plans were for a honcho style frame with a drop down for the battery try, front/rear bumpers and link mounts. I'm probably going to work up a pattern from cardboard and try to make it out of 1/2" c-channel. I've got to get the $$$ set aside for it first though.
